Piano by Brooke

“Im starting in my third semester as a music education student. My principal instrument is piano and I study with Prof. Glaser. I’ve studied works by Chopin, Beethoven, Bach, Ibert, and Mozart. Studying music can be touch but I love what I’m doing.” -Brooke

If you’re also into music, Baker East has a piano in the rec room and Baker West has practice rooms in the basement.

Grace Brott- Studio Award

Grace Brott is a 3rd year Architecture Major and Humanities Scholar. This semester she won the Studio Award for her hard work and amazing attitude. The Studio Award is given to the top student in each studio. She received this award after pitching her amazing rest area design before a panel of judges. Her rest area is titled “Roadside Lantern”, and she spent 6 weeks perfecting it. Here are some pictures of “Roadside Lantern”:

Community Meetings

Community meetings happen at the first Wednesday of every month in the BE Rec Room. One of my favorite things about them is that I get to see all my friends, especially those I haven’t seen in a while.

Other cool things that happen here are:

  • LC spotlights
  • Guest speakers
  • Notice of upcoming events
  • Community chat discussions
  • Ben Fortman (always a good time)

MLK Day of Service

Humanities Scholars participated in Ohio State’s Annual MLK Day of Service event, leading two groups to different local Columbus organizations in need of some volunteer help. One group helped out at a Salvation Army sorting through some of the bulk donations they had recently received, while the other group of humanities scholars provided assistance at a local area nursing home. Humanities scholars participate in many community service events both through the university with other groups, as well as event planned and carried out solely by members.

Baker Semi Formal

Open to all Baker Hall residents, including Humanities & Arts Scholars, this dance is a fun excuse to dress up, eat desserts, and party with friends. The past two years it’s taken place at The Vault downtown, with admission donations going to BuckeyeThon.

Cultural Festivals

Columbus is such a wonderful city to be in, with lots to do and see. One of my favorites being all the cultural festivals that take place downtown. For example, a group of Humanities Scholars often go to the Greek, Italian, and Caribbean Festivals.

Mentor Program

From Day 1 this program had my back, if not sooner. Over the summer I received an email from 3 upperclassmen introducing themselves as my mentors. They sent me helpful tips before move in day such as what to pack, what to expect during move in, and Welcome Week events to attend. I had 2 other freshman in my mentor group and we all met in person after the First Year Retreat. Every Humanities freshman gets a mentor group, which is there to answer questions, become friends, and give reminders. Some groups are move involved than others, but either way I know I appreciated my mentors, and eventually became a mentor myself (one of the many leadership opportunities available within scholars).
