Student Spotlight- Jin Liang

Jin, he him his, is a first year Humanities Scholar from Cleveland Ohio. “I’m currently majoring in Psychology; I’ve started a minor in Sociology, and I plan on doing Cognitive Science minor and a Communications minor as well. My biggest hobby is drawing and painting, and I really like modern abstract art (but I also like playing video games and reading but these are kind of vanilla and lame, so we don’t talk about them).” Jin’s fun fact is that he is technically an award-winning artist as he was awarded 3rd place in the Congressional Art Competition regionals. You can see some of his drawings included on this post. His favorite Humanities memory has to be the Chicago trip, “I loved every single second of that trip. Even though the musical and art museums and stuff were really cool to see, my favorite aspect of the trip is that I was able to not only share but also make these precious experiences and memories with friends.”

Doc & Talk: Five Foot Two

On Thursday September 19, 2019 the academic committee of the leadership council put on a Doc & Talk for Lady Gaga’s Five Foot Two. The documentary beautifully illustrated the highlights and lowlights of stardom and immersed the viewer into Gaga’s hectic world. After viewing the documentary together, we all discussed our initial thoughts and feelings about the film. We discussed how the film did a great job of humanizing the larger than life icon that is Lady Gaga. The documentary starts at the beginning of one of Lady Gaga’s days with no explanation. This helps the viewer get acquainted to Gaga’s crazy lifestyle and busy schedule. The documentary didn’t just show Gaga at her best, it revealed the mental and physical pains she has to overcome on a daily basis. This made her relatable. The audience was able to see Lady Gaga’s struggles and watch as she worked to overcome them. Towards the end of our discussion we got on the topic of the insane pressure Lady Gaga must feel trying to please her fans and the outside world. She always has eyes on her and has to always look perfect while in public. Although she talks of how comfortable in her own skin, she is constantly asking how she looks. This reveals that body image is an everyday challenge that you have to win to feel good in your own skin. Each day brings on a new insecurity that you have to fight off. Even if you are a famous icon. This documentary was brilliantly executed and very enlightening. The conversation that followed the documentary was engaging and educational. The Doc & Talk was a great way to have important conversations with fellow Humanties Scholars.
