Columbus To Do List

Because the members of my HES peer group are very busy, we elected to explore a location close to campus so that everyone could participate. We chose to go to Trism, a trendy smoothie bar that doubles as a bar at night. Obviously, we visited during the daytime to enjoy the smoothies. The inside of the building has a sleek, modern feel, and the smoothies were superb. The trip was a nice midday break from my classes where I could enjoy a snack and talk with my friends. I would definitely go back to Trism for a smoothie, and maybe next time I could try the food as well.

Columbus To Do List

The list I have chosen for the Columbus To Do List is the neighborhood list. Being from Chicago, I know very little about the city of Columbus. When family or friends come to visit, I want to have the knowledge and experience to be able to show them my favorite restaurants and stores. Hopefully, this assignment will also provide the opportunity to explore the many different cultures in the Columbus area . I would love to find some peaceful places I can go to escape the stress of school for a little while and maybe enjoy a nice meal while there. Columbus has so much to offer, and I cannot wait to explore.

The first place that I chose to explore was German Village. When my friends from home came to visit for a weekend, we wanted to go somewhere that none of us had been before, so I immediately consulted the Columbus To Do List. The two things we were most excited about exploring were the Book Loft and Schmidt’s Sausage Haus. Our first stop was to the 32 room maze of books, The Book Loft. We spent close to two hours browsing the wide collection of novels, comics, calendars, and so much more. Each room is filled from floor to ceiling with books of a different category from teen fiction to automobiles to history. Before we left, I bought Game of Thrones. After the Book Loft, we went to Schmidt’s for a sweet treat. The cream puffs most definitely lived up to our expectations! However, what I loved most about German Village was its culture. From the quaint houses to the beautiful brick roads and sidewalks, it is hard to believe that the first settlers intent was to build simple homes that would blend in. I would most definitely visit German Village again; I always love a new book!

The second place on the neighborhood list that I visited was downtown Columbus. While downtown, my friends and I spent our time at COSI. Because I grew up in Illinois, I had never been to COSI, but my roommate Sarah has been there several times. It was fun to have her show us around to her favorite parts of the museum. Although COSI is geared towards smaller children, we were still able to have a fun time walking around. The picture above shows two of my roommates and I crammed into the small submarine that you are able to lower yourself into. My favorite part of the evening was riding the unicycle along the giant tight rope! It was definitely a fun night out with my roommates, and I would recommend the museum to other people, especially if you need somewhere to go with a family.

The third and final location that I visited was the Short North. Although this is not specifically listed on the neighborhood list, I felt that it was an important part of Columbus that I would be visiting often. Along with my friend Emma, I was able to get dinner at the North Market and enjoy some rolled ice cream from Simply Rolled Ice Cream. While walking down High Street, Emma and I quickly discovered that HighBall was happening that weekend! Walking down High Street alongside Pennywise and other fictional characters was quite entertaining! It was a perfect example of why the Short North is one of my favorite places near campus: there is always something fun happening.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed completing the Columbus To Do List. The best part of this assignment was that it forced me to explore Columbus with my new friends and provided ideas for fun things to do when my friends from home came to visit. Before coming to Ohio State, I knew very little about Columbus, but now I feel comfortable exploring  the city and have an appreciation for it. One thing I have yet to do is go to an art gallery in the Short North. I would love to spend time enjoying the local art. For anyone else attempting the Columbus To Do List, I would recommend pursuing activities you think you will enjoy. This assignment can be very fun if you spend your time exploring places that interest you!

Artifacts

In high school, I spent a majority of my time in the choir room. From class, to lunch, to after school rehearsals, there was never a shortage of reasons to go there. When I walked into the choir room, I was able to forget about the stress of school and spend time doing what I love with my best friends. Music has always been an integral part of my life, and it has helped me grow as a person. When I first started high school, I was a shy freshman who preferred to sit in the back of classroom. By the end of my senior year, I was running rehearsals and performing solos. Choir led me to people who encouraged me to do my best and reach my goals.

These past few months at Ohio State would have been entirely different if my roommates were not my best friends. Although the first two weeks were filled with awkward silence, by mid-September we were staying up until three in the morning just talking! Every Sunday, my roommates, some of our friends, and I watch a Harry Potter movie as a nice way to end the week and prepare ourselves for the next one. These Sunday movie nights are what I look forward to in the midst of a stressful week. The friends I have made on my floor through HES keep me sane and, therefore, enable me to be a better student.

About Me

I am a freshman at Ohio State studying Biomedical Engineering and a member of the Humanitarian Engineering Scholars program. On campus, I am involved in the Biomedical Engineering Society as well as the a cappella group Scarlet and Grace Notes. In the future, I hope to participate in undergraduate research and get involved in community service projects centered around engineering. I am from a suburb of Chicago, but I hope to live in the city someday. I am excited for the opportunities that Ohio State will provide me to open doors for the future!

Competition: I always strive to do the best that I can at everything I do, despite obstacles. I recognize areas where I cannot excel and focus my competitive efforts in places I can succeed.

Context: Looking back on previous mistakes is the best way to eliminate them. I tend to think contextually when approaching problems, using past experiences to my advantage.

Harmony: Harmonious people get along with others and avoid conflict. Personally, I enjoy hearing other people’s perspective and keeping everyone happy.

Restorative: Restorative people are attracted to problem solving, which is fitting for an engineer. Organizing the details of a problem is one of my strengths as a problem-solver.

Consistency: Every aspect of my day follows a structure that I am wary to change. I am detail oriented and enjoy creating lists to follow.
