Year in Review 2017-2018

It’s crazy to think that I’m about to graduate from the Dunn Sport and Wellness scholars program! It has made my first two years as an undergrad at Ohio State both meaningful and impactful, and am incredibly grateful to have been a part of it. DSWS has opened doors for me to volunteer with a variety of organizations in Columbus including the Columbus Marathon, Buckeyethon, The Columbus Dream Center, the Dunn Dash Indoor Triathlon, and Friends of Goodale Park. This volunteering has opened my eyes to the needs in our city and has shown to me that I can make a difference in the community. The program has helped me develop personally this year through learning from a variety of speakers, from my peers, and from the experiences it has provided. Many of the guest speakers at our meetings challenged me to assess my personal wellness and life balance, and have pushed me to take a closer look at my career goals to assure that they match my passions well.

I have matured greatly during my freshman and sophomore years here at OSU – personally, professionally, and academically – and am excited to see my continued personal growth during my remaining two years here. It is difficult to even remember who exactly I was before DSWS and before college.  The DSWS freshman leadership class in fall 2016 began my personal journey to becoming actively aware of my values, strengths and weaknesses, and my leadership style. The intentional extracurricular activities in addition to the weekly meetings have further developed my awareness, congruency of character, and personal wellness. The time spent living, learning, and having fun with my fellow DSWS scholars (especially during freshman year while living in Morrill Tower) have shaped my actions and experiences at Ohio State for the better. Being a part of such a strong community of academic achievers has pushed me to become as strong as I can be academically as well, which is incredibly important for my career. Dunn Scholars has been there for me through the good and the bad, and I would not change being a part of this group for the world. It would not be all that it is without the hard work of our advisors and student leaders or without the great scholars themselves. I am excited to continue my involvement in DSWS through future third and fourth year programming, and cannot express my gratitude for this program enough!

Year in Review 2016-2017

During my freshman year at Ohio State, I have grown in ways I could not have imagined before coming to college.  It was a rough process to try to figure out how to effectively study for classes and to balance my classes with extracurriculars, but I got better and better at is as the year went on.  Lots of trial and error made it possible for me to become the student I am today.  I was also able to grow as an undergraduate researcher at the OSU Sports Medicine Research Institute- I started out by doing basic, data entry tasks at the beginning of the year and ended the year by presenting my own research poster project at the OSU Sports Medicine Research Day in May.  One of the most impactful ways I grew this year as well was in my religion.  I started going to Rock City Church in October of my freshman year, and was able to grow in my faith and am going to go on my first mission trip this summer.  It will be a nine day trip to Choluteca, Honduras, and I am incredibly excited to go and serve the people there.  Another major way I grew this year was in my relationships with others.  I have never had such close, tight-knit friendships as I have this year and it was been awesome for me to get to know so many people on such a deep level.  Overall, it has been an incredible freshman year full of self-improvement and maturation, and I am so grateful to call Ohio State home.

Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: I have been able to develop my appreciation for diversity through the Spanish classes I have taken this year.  I have learned about different cultures of Spanish-speaking countries, and will be traveling to Honduras this summer to experience their culture firsthand.
  • Original Inquiry: I have been working in the OSU Sports Medicine Research Laboratory for over a year now, and am presenting my poster project Comparison of Muscle Strength and Quality of Movement in Persons After Surgery for Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome at Sports Medicine Research Day 2017.
  • Academic Enrichment: I have been able to enrich my academic experience greatly through the Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars program.  I have learned a ton about careers and life through the various speakers brought in to talk to our scholars group.  Likewise, the group activities we have participated in have been a very fun way to enhance my time at Ohio State.
  • Leadership Development: I have become more self-aware and have begun to develop my leadership style through the leadership course I took with DSWS in the fall of my freshman year.
  • Service Engagement: I enjoy volunteering, and have had the opportunity to volunteer with various organizations during my freshman year at OSU, including with the Columbus Marathon, Habitat for Humanity, the Dunn Dash Indoor Triathlon, the Columbus Dream Center, and Buckeyethon.

Artifacts

Buckeyethon (February 2017)

Buckeython is 12-hour dance marathon that raises funds and awareness for Nationwide Children’s Hospital research efforts to fight pediatric cancer.  I raised $250 and had an awesome time dancing with my fellow DSWS scholars on the orange team.  Some of the highlights of the night included the Rave Hour, milkshakes from Sloopy’s, the Silent Disco, and Country Line-Dancing.  It was a long, super fun night; I had tons of fun dancing and supporting such a great cause!

Buck-I-SERV (December 2016)

During winter break of my freshmen year, I went on a Buck-I-SERV trip to Charleston, SC to work with Habitat for Humanity.  I went with nine other OSU students and we served the community by wrapping donated Christmas presents for kids in need, by building cabinets in the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store, and by helping build a new Habitat house.  In our free time we visited downtown Charolette, NC, explored Charleston, SC, tried tons of new food (including gator meat!), met up with the OSU alumni club “Buckeyes of Low-County”, and got to know each other very well.  I had a fantastic time and it was one of the most meaningful experiences for me during my freshman year at OSU.

Ohio State vs. Michigan Football Game (November 2016)

The OSU vs. Michigan 2016 football game was probably the greatest sporting event I have ever attended!  The buckeyes made a great comeback and ended up winning in double overtime.  My friends and I rushed the field from high up in the South Stands and managed to get on the field in time to sing Carmen Ohio with the football players.  It was a huge celebration on the field after that and it was an experience I will never forget!

DSWS Fall Day of Service (November 2016)

One of my favorite volunteer activities of my freshman year was doing the “Adopt-A-Block” Program through the Columbus Dream Center with other Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars.  We went to the Hilltop area of Columbus to hand out groceries to families in need and to clean up the neighborhood.  It great to spend the day with my DSWS friends while giving back to the community.

Intramural Sand Volleyball (September 2016)

I played on an intramural sand volleyball team with friends from my scholars program and from Morrill Tower in the beginning of the fall 2016 semester.  Although we weren’t very good, we did improve significantly throughout the short season and had lots of fun!

Career

Volunteer in the OSU Sports Medicine Research Lab (April 2016 – Current)

At the OSU Sports Medicine Research Lab, I assist in the collection of data from test subjects, organize data in a 3D imaging computer system, enter data into excel spreadsheets, contact test subjects through email, and work survey on various research projects.

Observer at the Jameson Crane Sports Medicine Institute Physical Therapy Clinic (February 2017 – Current)

I observe physical therapists treat a variety of injuries at the Jameson Crane Sports Medicine Institute in order to better understand the career and to obtain observation hours necessary to apply to DPT graduate programs.

About Me

I am a first-year Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholar at the Ohio State University.  I am majoring in Exercise Science and minoring in Spanish with the goal of going to graduate school to become a physical therapist.  When I’m not doing homework, I volunteer at the OSU Sports Medicine Research Lab, play intramural sports, and spend time with friends.  I also spend time involved in the Pre-PT/OT Club and the Exercise Science Club on campus.
