Sophomore Year In Review

Now that I have spent nearly two years in a college setting, I have further developed study habits and strategies that will not only be beneficial for the rest of my years at The Ohio State University, but will be beneficial for graduate school as well as my future occupation. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, I have learned and experienced adversity in a tough time where many were experiencing one of the worst years in our lifetime. I have learned how to overcome this adversity and I have only looked at the positives that each event as provided me rather than viewing it pessimistically.

I tend to travel to another country to study abroad in order to expand my academic knowledge as well as my cultural awareness about the many cultures of the world. Being confined to the American culture will not be beneficial to the development of my character and my career path. I also intend to spend time in the hospitals and hospital settings in order to increase my experience in the hospitals as I hope to work in one as a psychiatrist one day. Additionally, I will be participating in research in Ohio as well as in Taiwan to increase my lab, research, and medical experience as it will prove to be beneficial in the future.

I will be participating in research at the NCCU in Taiwan for three months in hopes to pursue my experience in the lab as well as my neurological and psychological knowledge. I will be working as an intern for Professor Dr. Ruey Ming Liao and we will be researching the effects of substance abuse on behavior, such as low-rate-response behavior as well as overall cognitive and affective functions.

Year in Review

In the past year, developing as a person and a student has been drastic as the transition to college has been a huge factor. This year, I have learned that peer collaboration and networking is a huge part in the college life and for the future. Being able to collaborate with peers creates a better environment for learning. Additionally, developing study habits and strategies to enhance my learning has been a huge change as having independence in college translates to being able to have time management so that I am able to balance all of my classes. In the future, I hope to learn how to open up opportunities for myself that will help me with my intended major and career such as research opportunities or internships. Also, I intend to develop more connections with important faculty such as professors as they are one of the most important resources that The Ohio State University provides.

G.O.A.L.S.

I decided to become a Biological Science Scholar because I saw a great opportunity to obtain more information about my intended major and future career. It’s also a great way to network and find ways to help the community around me. I’ve always wanted to pursue a career that would be beneficial to the wellbeing of others . Additionally, research is important to me as it can result in the discovery of new ideas that may be revolutionary to the medical field. The Scholars program is a great place to start research as connections may be easier found.

Having the opportunity to not only serve in the community, but also in other places in the world, studying abroad is important as it puts you in an unfamiliar community and takes you out of your comfort zone. I am aiming to study abroad at some point in my college career as it will not only be benefiting with my future career as it will provide more opportunities with presenting more life experiences and gaining personal connections. Being confined to one area will not be beneficial as there are more problems that may not have as much attention that may need more awareness. Going out to study abroad will help bring awareness to problems that may be not yet discovered but need to be solved. Additionally, as I am aiming to be a psychiatrist, it may give me other perspectives on how life is lived and how other cultures might be different than my own.

Career

Being evolved in volunteering at the Wesley Glen Retirement Home has been a useful experience as I have realized that there are many communities out there that need to be recognized. This community of elderly in particular have shown me that, though you may have specific focus in life, that should not cloud your ability to see that other people need help as well apart from a specific group that a certain profession may target.

My high school diploma is an item that signifies the end of an era and the start of a new beginning.
