International Drainage Hall of Fame 2022 Inductees
The International Program for Water Management in Agriculture at The Ohio State University administers the International Drainage Hall of Fame award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the development and use of drainage in agricultural production. This year, two new inductees joined the ranks of the International Drainage Hall of Fame: Dr. Dan Jaynes, former Research Soil Scientist with the USDA Agricultural Research Service, and Mr. Charlie Schafer, President and Owner of Agri Drain Corporation. Their contributions were highlighted in an awards ceremony on August 31, 2022, held in conjunction with the 11th International Drainage Symposium in Des Moines, Iowa. Find more information about the honorees and the event on the OSU Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering’s website, or watch our video.
A special session honoring Larry Brown and Andy Ward
During the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) Annual International Meeting in Houston, TX, the drainage community (NRES-23) organized a special session honoring the contributions of Drs. Larry Brown and Andy Ward on July 19, 2022. Both of these individuals were faculty members of the OSU Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering for 30+ years, and each served as directors of the Overholt Drainage Education and Research Program.

Revisiting the 2022 Overholt Drainage School
The 2022 Overholt Drainage School (https://u.osu.edu/hshw/events/past-events/) was held from March 14 – 18, 2022 at The Ohio State University’s Lima campus. This year’s School had 55 attendees and featured contributions from about 30 instructors. The training consisted of panel discussions, hands-on activities and team exercises, and lectures. Topics included soils basics and topographic investigation, drainage design and installation, conservation drainage, and drainage law. In 2022, we also introduced new content areas including GPS surveying and machine control as well as drainage design software. Post-event survey feedback indicated that the event was well-received, and we’re already taking this feedback into consideration as we plan to make the 2023 School even better!
