Course description

The Internship in Health Sciences is designed to offer Health Sciences program students an opportunity to apply their learning toward the achievement of practical goals and skills under the supervision of a preceptor and instructor.  Students can earn academic credit, repeatable to a maximum of six credit hours with a maximum of three credit hours applying toward major electives. Each credit hour requires 45 hours worked in the internship (1 credit hour = 45 hours worked; 2 credit hours = 90 internship hours; etc.).

The internship will be a non-paid experience that provides a real-world, career-related work experience where students assume temporary roles and projects as members of an organization. Projects should be developed to provide experience in the student’s area of interest and promote self-development.  Students will have the opportunity to link theory and practice, evaluate future career goals, gain hands-on experience, test various careers and work environments, and identify and develop career-related skills and abilities. The internship will also provide the opportunity for students to increase their marketability and connect with professionals through networking. The specific outcomes of the internship are unique for each student according to their personal interests, needs, and goals.

Prerequisites: Enrollment as a junior or senior in the Health Sciences program and instructor approval

Objectives: Upon successful completion of the internship, the student will be able to:

  1. Refine a career-related and or post graduate goal
  2. Report specific knowledge, skills, and experience gained
  3. Link the internship experience to Health Sciences Program coursework
  4. Develop a final project
  5. Evaluate the internship
