Academic Interview

1.) What was the most difficult class that you took during your 4 years at Ohio State? What is one helpful tip for an incoming student in that class?

I would say the most difficult class I have taken at OSU would be Accelerated Calculus. This class just moved super quickly and it was the first semester of my freshman year, so I was very overwhelmed. If an incoming student were to take that class, I would suggest getting ahead and asking lots of questions as soon as things don’t make sense. Also use your TAs as much as possible!!

2.) What kind of extracurricular activities do you think Medical schools look for most / are most appealing to them?

I think when applying to medical schools, it’s important to have community service and a diversity of other involvements. I think medical schools also look for applicants to be passionate about at least one of their student organizations and have a leadership role.

3.) What types of shadowing / work in the field of health care did you do through the years?

In my three years at OSU, I have shadowed a few different physicians at the hospital, and I have an internship in the Emergency Department of the Wexner Medical Center.

4.) Do you feel that research is something that is needed on an Medical school application? If you did research, explain your experience.

I think research is important, but not definitely necessary.  I did not want to do typical lab research, but I did do a type of research of evaluating whether nurse hand offs at bedside affects patient experience scores.

5.) What is one piece of advice that you would give to a freshman pursuing a career in the health field?

I would encourage freshmen in the health field to really immerse themselves in the field and become as knowledgeable as possible. My perspective at the beginning of college is much different than mine now, and I think that’s because I became involved in the field.
