In this poster you will see statistics on voter ignorance with specific numbers regarding the demographic in which college students are included. This topic is important because all too often voters, especially young voters, head into the polls with little or no knowledge for who are what they are casting their ballot. Informing voters can actually be pretty simple especially with all the technology the world holds, and it doesn’t have to be extremely time consuming either. This poster presents some possibilities for getting said information and also explains who this effects most, why it is important, and most importantly, how we can combat voter ignorance especially with college-age voters. 2nd year advocacy proj – Read-Only

As social media and the internet continue to play an important role in today’s society, news spread through social media, is also growing in importance. The biggest problem with internet news, or news seen through social media, is the validity. Every time an article is shared, tweeted, or posted, this question arises: how do I know this is true? The answer to this question is almost never easy to find, especially with hyperpartisan news outlets on either side of the spectrum. Almost always, we’re left questioning whether news articles are bipartisan or even accurate.

Most social media outlets have little to no system for preventing fake, or hyperpartisan news. Anything you feel like sharing or posting is all fair game when it comes to most sites. Currently, the only site investing in fact-checking technology is Facebook. Facebook has recently invested in fact checking software called RealClearPolitics’. This runs through six databases and checks validity of news stories, and if discovered fake, attempts to decrease their circulation on the site. This is one of the first times a social media site has taken steps to prevent the circulation, or at least decrease the circulation, of false news. Despite this, other social media websites are still behind on implementing programs such as this.

In the future, there are many steps social media sites could take in order to prevent the circulation of hyperpartisan or fake news. One of these steps is to commit to a program such as Facebook has done. Implement technology that fact checks things for the site and runs it through multiple checks in order to combat its circulation. Along with social media sites putting in work, news outlets should focus on this problem as well. Though some sites are admittedly satire or written for humor and disregard the truth all in good fun, others may not even consider what they post. Many news sites post so fast because they want to be the first place you hear it from, but often forget to take time in assuring that each piece of information is true and factual. Not only this, but many sites are notoriously hyperpartisan, or pick a very clear side of the political spectrum and write from that standpoint. If more news sites wrote with bipartisan ideas in mind, their pieces may come out much more factual and a lot less biased.

G.O.A.L.S.

 

  • Global Awareness: I’m really interested in studying abroad, specifically somewhere in France and/or the Canadian Parliament internship opportunity. Also, I would really enjoy working internationally in the future, so any study abroad opportunity would be very beneficial to me.
  • Original Inquiry: Starting this year, I’d like to look into some research projects focusing on international relations or international politics. In the future, I want to be able to get into one of those projects and be a contributor to the research.
  • Academic Enrichment: This is probably the most obvious, but I want to keep a good GPA throughout my time here. More than that, however, I want to be able to grow as a scholar and do more than regurgitate information given to me by my professors. I would like to be able to form thought-provoking ideas and use those in my academics to be successful at Ohio State.
  • Leadership Development: In these first two weeks here I’ve already had so many opportunities to develop leadership skill. I’m very into sports, and have joined the OSU Club Tennis program and would really like to continue that through my years here, and possible pursue a leadership role in the organization. Along with that, I’m very interested in becoming an RA in the future and becoming more involved with the College Republicans.
  • Service Engagement: Along with the other organizations I found during welcome week, I was super interested in College Mentors for Kids. This program works with kids in local schools, and I feel that would be a really great way to get involved in the community here. It seems like a really good program, and I am very interested in pursuing it.

Peer Mentor Interview!

 

One of my peer mentors is Emma. She is from Sandusky, OH, is a junior, and majors in economics and French. She originally started off as a bio major, but realized quickly that she didn’t really like it. During and internship fair her freshman year she got the opportunity to intern with Cedar Point over the summer. Emma really enjoyed her internship there and through that, she realized she would really like to manage something like that. Her advice to me was to find something that works for you. Some people really like to join lots of clubs, and some don’t, but don’t feel pressure to do what everyone else is doing. If a lot of clubs is what you want then do it, but if that doesn’t seem like you, then don’t

About Me

Hey, my name is Kara and I’m from Portville, NY, which is about an hour and half south of buffalo(you’d have to look it up to know exactly where it is). I’m double majoring in political science and international affairs and on a pre-law track as well. I really hope to one day work for the UN or at a US embassy. I really love sports and played tennis, basketball, and softball in high school, so obviously I can’t wait to go to all the sporting events OSU has to offer. I like to listen to all types of music and love to try new things and new foods! I was in a lot of clubs in high school as well. I was the treasurer for NHS and our student council. I also attended Empire Girls’ State last summer and participate in some of my local charities at home. It has been crazy meeting everyone I’ve talked to over the phone, but super fun too. I really like OSU so far and can’t wait to see where the next four years take me!
