My First Semester at OSU

My first semester at OSU was full of more ups and downs than I could have ever imagined. I have made more memories and more friends than I ever thought was possible. In the beginning of the year, I was terrified of losing my friends at home. However, that quickly changed when I realized that “three hours from home” is not that far and my friends were able to come and visit me often. I also worried about being away from my dad because he is my best friend and a single parent. Unfortunately, the worst part of my semester was finding out my dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 Liver Cancer for the third time. It definitely changed my outlook on everything about college and there were many times that I wanted to go home. Yet, I pushed through and leaned on my friends and am now coming to terms with the whole situation. Although it is far from easy, I am learning to cope with it more and more everyday. 

    I have enjoyed being a part of the arts scholars community because I love being surrounded by creative people who are just like me. The events and meetings have been really therapeutic and informative for me and I have looked forward to them every week. It has been difficult to be active in the arts scholars because of everything going on in my family, but my Bigs and Roman have been so understanding and helpful. It will be hard to be involved with Arts Scholars in the future because I have not been focused and have not have been myself mentally. I think it will be good for me to be involved with the program because it is very therapeutic for me and helps my creativity flow. I am thankful to have been apart of the ASC community and to have had an amazing first semester at tOSU.

Engage the Arts Topic Reflection
I attended the Theatre Department’s production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in September, and it was definitely unlike any Shakespeare production I had ever seen. The show took a modern, comedic turn on the famous production, and centered it around two families dueling over who had better-tasting pizza. After being so incredibly inspired by the creativity and uniqueness of the production, I decided to base my Engage the Arts project around the production. To recreate the artwork, I will write and perform a song on the ukulele based on this Romeo and Juliet adaptation. By playing an instrument I am so comfortable with, I will be able to make a deeper connect to the story I am trying to retell. Because the team behind this production put so much effort into making the show one-of-a-kind, I will have a lot of fascinating dialogue and scenes to use as my inspiration to create lyrics.

My First Week at OSU

Since I have moved into Ohio State, I have been blown away with the amount of activities and social events that have occurred on and around the campus. Welcome Week helped me to make many new connections and strengthen friendships. I really liked that Welcome Week had something for everyone and that I could attend events that specifically peaked my interest. My favorite event was the Buck-i-Frenzy because I loved exploring all of the cool vendors and winning prizes.

I am honestly surprised that even though I have lived on campus for two weeks, I feel like I am at home. The only difficult part of living at OSU is being without my best friends and my dad. I really enjoy my classes because they are all designed to fit my interests and passions.

I expected that it would take a lot longer than it has for me to feel like I have a home at Ohio State; however, I already feel like I really belong here. I have experienced so much in my short time here and already have made so many special memories. I am so excited to see what else my freshman year holds for me!

About Me

Chloe Housteau is a first year Theatre major at the Ohio State University. She was born and raised in Youngstown, OH, and attended Boardman High School, where she graduated with high honors. She is also a recipient of the Chick-fil-A “Remarkable Futures” scholarship. After graduating from tOSU, she plans to move to California for work to peruse her dream of becoming a film and television actress.

Chloe has worked at Chick-fil-A throughout high school and plans on obtaining a new job on campus. She also enjoys performing in theatrical productions, singing in various choral groups, and actively participating in her church’s events. When she is not in class, she is often writing, playing her ukulele, or watching Friends on Netflix.
