Campus Observation Drawings

Mirror lake composition demonstrating a “Calm” mood
Canfield courtyard piece demonstrating a “Free” atmosphere

Project Statement

Two sketches from the campus area (Mirror lake and Canfield Hall) demonstrating calm and freeing atmospheres. The sketches were done relatively freehand, using an observation method to determine angles and create a full scene. The shapes in the canopy in the second piece give a sense of fantasy while remaining a semblanceĀ  of realism, as to create the “free” atmosphere. To create the calm atmosphere oif the first image, flowing lines and solid forms like the leaves and building were used to create an organized environment that would encourage a calm feeling from the viewer.

Reflection

These feel very rough and I would add a lot more detail in the shading given the techniques I am familiar with now given the opportunity. Even still, this project gave me a lot of insight on creating a space freehand without using perfect perspective. It became a very good drafting tool to be able to sketch like this and not feel a whole lot of pressure to create a perfect outcome, which was something I struggled with before.
