Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. Global Awareness

When I think of global awareness, I think of having enough awareness to understand that my own perspective is not the only perspective. Global awareness indicates a sense of humility – that is, the ability to admit that we can only develop perspectives based on the relatively small area of world in which we have lived. To understand more about the world and the people in it, we must immerse ourselves into those cultures. This is my goal. To broaden my perspectives and gain new insights on the world around me based on these other cultures. To achieve this, I would love to perform in some sort of scientific research in a foreign country post-graduation. To live and learn in another country seems to me like the best way to gain a new perspective.

Original Inquiry

Original inquiry is so mind-expanding. It causes you to truly think, problem solve, and come up with original thoughts and ideas. This is key to success in life in general. True success is built from within. By having some sort of original inquiry, you are building that success for yourself while giving yourself a sense of accomplishment for doing something that is, in a sense, only yours. As I stated, I would love to participate in research overseas once I graduate. Prior to this, I intend to find summer research projects here at Ohio State later down the road and engage in as much discovery as time will allow.

Academic Enrichment

Ohio State has so much to offer, but of course the reason I came here is for my education. The educational resources available to students is incredible, especially as a member of the honors program. The rigorous coursework and challenging concepts are exactly what I was looking for in a higher education. I am currently a biochemistry major, and I’m in love with my science courses that require such a high level of intellect. Though challenging, they force me to think in new ways and understand harder concepts that ultimately feed my hunger for knowledge. I plan to continue in my biochemistry major and take honors-level courses that challenge the way I think and demand the best I can provide.

Leadership Development

Being amongst honors students is an honor (no pun intended), because my peers are the best of the best. Honors students raise their hand in class and are never afraid to challenge a notion or defend a claim. In other words, they inspire me. Being surrounded by so many students who are so confident in their academic abilities makes me more confident in my own. By taking the lead in class, asking questions, and giving answers, the honors program strengthens my leadership skills in innumerable ways. Additionally, I am a member of the women’s synchronized swimming team and have gained countless leadership skills from being a part of such a value-oriented team. Being a part of this team for the next four years will only further strengthen my leadership development by learning how to work with a team and lead those who surround me to success.

Service Engagement

The value of service cannot be emphasized enough. When we perform service, whether large projects or small acts of kindness, we give what we have to other people who need it, and that is our most fundamental duty as human beings. So many problems in this world would be fixed if we all just leant each other a hand. As a member of the synchro team, I am required to perform at least 24 hours of community service per semester. As a member of society, I hope I out-perform that number. Reaching out to the community is one of the best things we can do to directly have a positive impact on the people around us.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation includes both a description of the artifact and a reflection on why it is important to you, what you learned, and what it means for your next steps.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. About Me

My name is Rose Homoelle and no one knows how to pronounce my last name! It’s okay, don’t sweat it. I’ve been an avid synchronized swimmer since I was 9 years old and I’m lucky enough to be on our OSU synchro team. I’m currently majoring in biochemistry. I’ve always loved science and math because they are so challenging, making them the most satisfying to understand. My goals are pretty simple – I’m just looking to figure out within the next four years what I want to make of my life and enjoy my education in the process.
