1159 – Final Post

Being in this courses I learned a lot of valuable things that can help me in life and in the class room. I leafed about the different OSU websites that will help with basic subjects.  These websites that I learned in class helped in english far as citing and learning how to help with time management skills. Basic skills I also learned was how to help with procrastination, word processing and managing my files. I learned that technology has a lot of videos via youtube and different websites that can help you with the basic skills to be successful in the classroom. In this class I learned a ton about my self far as me being a student. I learned my strengths and weakness. The class taught me what type of learner I am and how I can study that best fit me. Like for example I learned that I am more of a visual learner and I need to see examples and I work better in groups. This information is important because I now know to attack the classroom in the right approach. Learning my strengths was also important to me because I know how I can use those strengths in the classroom for my advantage. I will apply the things I learned in this class like citing papers correctly when writing papers. This is very important because citing is the most important part of the paper. The class also taught me a website how to look up different articles or books and how to cite them either MLA or APA. Before this class I didn’t really now how to cite things properly and Im thankful I learned that. Another thing that I learned in this class that I can use in the class room is time management and procrastination. Time management is very important to me because I am a student athlete and I will have a very busy plate on my hands. This class taught me different tools and and also showed me videos that shows me different ways to manage my time. Now my Time management skills are a lot better and I no how to balance school and Ohio State football. Doing this I believe that this can raise my level on the playing field and GPA in the classroom. This course also taught me how to overcome the big thing all students seem to have – procrastination. This can cause you not to complete important task or push task back. During the course I seen different  ways to overcome procrastination. Like setting short term goals in between due dates. Also taking all distractions like cell phones, twitter, instagram, and Facebook. I really enjoyed this class it really taught me how to be a better student and the basic fundamentals to be a good student. It also improved my use of technology far as a educational stand point. I would recommend this class to anyone especially incoming freshman in the summer because it is a great way to get ready for the college level.

Search

This week we covered module 6 and I learned some valuable lessons that could be a positive effect on me while I’m in college. First thing I learned was how to search for articles and how I could site them properly  in my papers when I use them for resource .  Learning the MLA and APA citation is very important because most college papers are in that format. I also learned how to get the important information out of the articles you read called source creditablity . Like reliability , quality ,utility  are things that deal with source creditability. Also learned the difference between search and research . There are also three differnernt types of search engines on google.  First you have the keyword search, then the category word search and last but not least the metasearch.  In module 6 you also learn boolean logic. Boolean logic is allows you to retrieve more precise results. There are also different scholarly searches like the Google scholar and the University libraries that can help you with finding articles for papers and also learn how to site them and any form like MLA and APA.  I used these websites to complete the quiz and I also will use them when I start fall semester.

Listening and Viewing Strategies

Completing Module 5 I learned alot of new ways to enhance my study and listening skills. I learned 3 different ways of how to take notes such as the Cornell system, Mind maps, and keywords.  All these can enhance your study skills . These skills help organization, forces you to highlight key words and ask yourself key questions . The big question was “why do we take notes ?” I think we take notes to better our future study and preparations for upcoming assignments. I also think taking notes helps you focus when the teacher is talk and can get you more involved in the discussion. Being an active listener is also a plus when your are taking notes. Think and visualize what they are saying to grasp information. Write your own notes in your own hand writing so you can understand them when its time to review for test.  Be active in class can also help while taking notes in class. Ask the teacher questions and write down things that you don’t understand. I also learned new strategies on how to listen to podcast. like listening for the structure of the presentation and choosing when and where to listen. Use the features of the podcast like pause, stop, and play if you didn’t understand the instructions given.

Educational Videos

In the video it shows you how to overcome procrastination so you can complete important task.  Like the key tips were avoiding distractions, taking the assignment one day at time. The video also said set short term goals for self so you can complete task in a reasonable manner.

This video enhances alot of study skills not only for school but for life. I has real life topics and situations that are easy to relate to. The video is also entertaining by using jokes , music, and funny pictures. Overall I learned new tips to help with my procrastination which will help me in college when I have a busy with football and school. Time management is the most important skill to defeat procrastination.

Reading & Study Strategies

During this assignment I learned how to enhance my reading and study skills. Organization is key and using different things like spreadsheets, and having a well planned schedule will be a big factor. I also discovered new links that can help me with studying like www.StudyStack.com which is like online flashcards. Purdue OWL is a website that helps with writing and enhance spelling skills . I think this is good tool because you will write a ton of essays in college . Also taught me how to become an active reader, and reading the syllabus to get a full understanding of the course. Eliminating all distractions such as twitter, Facebook , and cell phones during study times is key as well. When studying highlight or underline key words in the text. Take side notes of the things your reading about so if you come back to the text information you want it is put to the side. Ask your self questions like; whats the main point ? why are they doing this ? Setting short term goals for yourself is also a good thing. Try to attack books by telling yourself to read a certain amount of pages a day. Reviewing notes with friends and having open discussions about the topic is a great tool as well. Before all test  follow up with a good nights rest before test and a nice breakfast.

Respect The Grind

Coming into college as a student athlete I worried about how I would balance school and football.  Being here in college for sometime now I can truly relate to your future struggles and worries.  First tip I would give you is ( if you need help ask). Its nothing wrong with asking for help, don’t struggle alone seek help so you can get the proper information or tutoring. Next tip is ( set short-term goals and expectations) doing this you can focus on one assignment at a time. (Manage your time) is the biggest tip. Procrastination could be the killer of your academic career , and this a horrible trait to have. Try to complete assignments as soon as you get them so you wont be trying to complete the task the day before due dates.  Eliminating distractions will help you over come procrastination, by just turning TV or cell phones off. ( Map your days out) have a regular schedule and plan out activities for you days during the week. Doing this can help you become more organized and you will know when things are due. College is an awesome experience and a grind at the same time, but using these tips can help ease the grind and could make you more successful.
