My sophomore year was full of learning, fun, and surprises- to say the least. I survived organic chemistry, the Buckeye’s loss to Clemson, and quarantine/covid-19. Transitioning from summer to fall semester is always a bit of a struggle, but I was able to live with my closest friends in a suite on north campus. I actually enjoyed taking o-chem, and aside from some newly founded health issues, I finished first semester pretty smoothly. Second semester, I finally took a Biology major course (and the only one required for all Bio majors) and I loved it- but it was cut short due to covid-19 and being sent home mid-semester. While I am grateful for my health and the safety of myself and my family, going home for spring break and not coming back was a huge bummer. However, I was able to finish the semester strong and work on some external personal goals- like running and cooking. I’m eager to start classes this fall and further my science and medical knowledge for graduate school. I was also able to get my STNA in 2019 and currently work as a PCA in Columbus. This year was certainly not what I had expected it to be, but I am grateful nonetheless.

Year in Review

My first semester here at Ohio State has had several up’s and down’s, but really mostly up’s. I truly feel like I have changed, and not just my study habits. My whole mindset has changed. I have a greater appreciation for everything my parents have done for me, I am no longer scared of “adulting”, and I am more excited for my future than ever; to name a few. Ohio State’s Biological Sciences Scholars program has allowed me to explore myself more academically, and has introduced me to many important people (professors, etc.) and many friendships. I very much look forward to next semester, and the rest of my academic career here.

As second semester comes to a close, I am proud of all of the work I have accomplished in this first year. This current spring semester I took a writing class in social psychology as a course for my minor. I was minoring in general psychology, but because of this course, I have changed my minor to social psychology. Attached below are some of the papers and work I completed over the semester.

GOALS stands for Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. Having and developing my goals is not only important for a scholars student, but for any student here at Ohio State or elsewhere.

  • Global Awareness: Being globally educated and having an understanding of what is going on around the world (and not just in the USA, in Ohio) is very important to me, and I believe it should be important to others. To expand my global awareness, I plan to study abroad to really get to learn more about history and understand how I, and everyone else, got to where I/we are today. Traveling and studying abroad can be expensive, so I also think putting a little “global awareness” into daily life is important as well. To elaborate, Ohio State is a very diverse school. Students come from around the country and the world. Just walking around campus one is bound to see many different students with varying ethnicities. Taking the time to educated oneself on different cultures, whether it be on your own time or by attending a success session, is essential to being an understanding, educated human being.
  • Original Inquiry: Research is a great way to explore and pursue one’s interests. I know I am very interested in Obstetrics, and hope to someday be able to research with an obstetrician or gynecologist. Research can be very academic and may even be required for majors. Getting involved in clubs or extra-curriculars can also allow one to explore their interests. I know I love to act and was involved in theatre in high school. I decided to take an acting class at OSU and am loving it so much I hope to be able to audition and be a part of a production here at OSU. Theatre allows me to express my love of acting and explore who I truly am by “being” other people. Being a biology major requires a lot of outside-the-classroom work and studying, but I know I have to continue to be creative and innovative. Theatre and research are great ways for anyone to pursue their interests and be themselves.
  • Academic Enrichment: I chose Biology as my major because it allows me to get the education and experiences I will need for graduate/PA/medical school. I will get to further my understanding of life by taking biology and chemistry courses. Aside from my major courses, I will also get to take general education courses that will help me become a more well-rounded student. I am currently in an acting class that allows me to be creative and express myself outside the laboratory/science classroom. I also plan to take many Psychology courses as I declare my minor in Psychology. I became very interested in Psychology in high school, so much that I tested out of taking any psychology courses in college. I found myself actually disappointed and realized I truly had a passion and interest in psychology and understanding the human brain. Thus, I am declaring a minor in psychology. Biology is, by definition, the study of life. Psychology is the study of the human mind and behavior. Both my major and my minor complement each other and will further my knowledge of life and people. I plan on having a career where I get to work with and alongside people. Pursuing a career in medicine by having a major in Biology allows me to do so, while Psychology enables me to further my understanding of life and people.
  • Leadership Development: To grow and develop as a leader during my first year of college, I have joined a club at Ohio State; Pre-Health Students for Change. This club is very informative on how to apply for medical/health related graduate school, has guest speakers (CEO of Wexner Center, the Dean of Vanderbilt’s Medical School, etc), and it’s members are interested in the same things I am career wise. The club allows for me to communicate and make friends with people who are in the same boat as I am, a student just trying to make it through undergrad school into medical/PA school. A goal of mine is to become a chairmen of this club eventually.
  • Service Engagement: Although I have not participated in much community service here at OSU yet, involvement in service is very important to me. I am from New Richmond, OH, a very small town outside of Cincinnati, located on the Ohio River. Last winter the river flooded more than it had in decades. Most of our town was completely devastated. I, as the National Honor Society President of my high school, organized groups to go down and help evacuate, and later clean up, our town. We were off several days of school due to students having to be evacuated. I had firsthandedly seen our whole community, and neighboring towns, come together to help out our village. I had never seen such devastation or suffering before this flood, and it was then I understood the importance of helping out your own community, and others, in a time of need.

Career

Ohio University’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine- also on PA campus.

One of my career goals is to attend PA or medical school (undecided between the two as of now). Through Ohio State’s Scholars program, I was able to visit Ohio University’s Physician Assistant program in Dublin, OH. This particular program emphasized the importance of primary care in urban and rural underdeveloped areas in Ohio. It was very evident that the OU faculty cared about these underdeveloped areas in Ohio. I had never really considered, prior to touring this school, that every universities PA school may have a different mission or goal for their students. Ohio University also has a cadaver lab that their PA students use. I thought this was super neat and realized this is a top priority for me when I begin to apply to schools.

Vision Statement

As I wrap up my sophomore year with a 2020 summer course, I have a lot to reflect on. This school year I not only struggled with finalizing on a post-undergraduate path, but I actually almost changed my major. However, after more advisor meetings, shadowing, talks with my close family & friends, and some very critical thinking- I am still pursuing a Biology B.S. with plans to go to PA school. This summer, 2020, I started a new job in patient care at a hospital/detox clinic as a PCA (patient care assistant) after working in a nursing home in 2019 as an STNA (state tested nurse aide). Working directly with patients and in the healthcare field has not only made me excited to pursue it more and more in-depth, but has again, supported my wanting to attend a Physician’s Assistant masters program after undergraduate school.

Statement of Action

Now that I’m an upperclassmen, I plan to get in more shadowing hours (a PA- but I would also love to shadow any other healthcare professional for the experience) these next two years and continue to work as a PCA/STNA a healthcare setting. I’m also continuing to purse a social psychology minor and will get to take more psych classes, including Abnormal Psychology this fall (2020). While I appreciate the backbone that general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, etc. provide for my major and my pre-professional career, I’m eager to start more classes with narrower topics. Beginning this fall 2020, I will also be a Resident Advisor (RA) on OSU’s south campus. I’m very excited for this position and can’t want to gain leadership experience through supporting, helping, and providing for freshmen/sophomore residents. Patient care experience, leadership experience, and shadowing will not only help me grow my resume for graduate school but will help me become a more well-rounded individual.

Artifacts

As I mentioned in my about me section, I love to travel and plan to take advantage of Ohio State’s study abroad program and opportunities. The picture to the right is me in Paris from a high school trip in 2016. My trip to Europe was so incredibly beautiful and very informative. I believe having a good understanding and knowledge of world history is important to truly understand why and how we got where we are today. France, and many oImage may contain: one or more people, people standing, sky and outdoorther European countries, hold so much history affected our ancestors and how we live life today. As a biology major, I won’t be taking too many history classes. Studying abroad and traveling will give me a tangible experience to actually see history and continue to learn and educate myself. Plus- European food is pretty good.

In Spring of 2020, Dr. Rachelle M. M. Adams came to my Biology 3401 class and taught a seminar on fungus-growing ants and symbiotic relationships. Her presentation was fascinating and only confirmed my love for science and my want to pursue it. I wrote a summary paper on the seminar- which you can find below.

About Me

Hi! My Name is Natalie Holdsworth and I am from Cincinnati, Ohio, but these days you can find me at The Ohio State University in Columbus. (Class of ’22- Go Bucks!) While I wasn’t always sure about what I would end up studying, I did know I wanted to pursue a career where I could work with people. I absolutely love meeting new people, hearing their stories, and learning what they have to offer. Aside from people, I also discovered that I have a passion for helping people as well. Thus, I decided on studying Biology/Pre-Med, with hopes to go to physicians assistant school or medical school! I would love to work with obstetrics (as the human body absolutely amazes me with it’s ability to grow another human) but I know I have a lot of time until I will have to worry about specializing. Ohio State is full of so many different opportunities and ways for me to achieve my academic goals and interests! One thing I plan to do is take full advantage of Ohio State’s study abroad programs. I am loving OSU and can’t wait to see what the future holds for me!

In this E-Portfolio web-page you can find more about me and my education and career under Artifacts, Career, GOALS, and Year in Review.
