Events Around Campus

  • Interested in marching in this year’s Latino Heritage Month Parade? Sign up! We are working with the Campus ERG group OLE and our Latino Medical Student Association to recruit interested members to march together. We will be creating t-shirts for the group. If interested in join, please register using this survey. Please send to any other Latino WMC or campus groups you may feel would be interested!

Professional Development Opportunities

  • Festival Latino Volunteering Opportunities – August 10, 2024 – August 11, 2024. There are still opportunities to volunteer. If you are interested in volunteering for this event, contact Bibiana Bishop directly for more information.
    • Available times – Saturday from 10 to 2 pm & 2 to 6pm and Sunday 10 to 2 pm & 2 to 6 pm.
  • Apply for the Staff Leadership Series – The Women’s Place is accepting applications for the 2024-25 Staff Leadership Series (SLS), a 12-month, experiential leadership initiative (more information attached). Click HERE to learn more on how to apply and the program expectations.

Asian American & Pacific Islander Month from the APIDA ERG – May marks Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, which celebrates the histories of Americans hailing from across the Asian continent and from the Pacific islands of Hawaii, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. This month is celebration of our history and culture deeply embedded in the American social fabric for over two hundred years. In 1977, Representative Frank Horton’s introduced a resolution to change Pacific/Asian American Heritage Week to AANHPI Heritage Month and in 1978 it passed and signed by President Cater into law.

Asian Festival Volunteering Opportunities – May 24th- May 26th . There are still opportunities to volunteer. If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please connect using the signup genius link. Feel free to share with others who might be interested in volunteering. *VOLUNTEERS FROM VARIOUS AREAS NEEDED*
– The registration area is looking for volunteers for various shifts on both days and you do not have to have a clinical background.
– Interpreters for ALL languages are always needed. There is a greater need for Asian languages, but Spanish and Arabic interpreters were needed in the past. Experience with medical interpreting preferred.
– In addition, physicians and Advanced Practice Providers are needed at the last table, “Clinician’s Wrap-up” to review findings at the health screening and answer general health-related questions.

Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) CommUNITYten Women in Medicine and Biomedical Science Conference June 7th -8th. Registration and award nominations are now open and available to all faculty, staff, trainees and industry members in medicine and biomedical science. The purpose of this conference is to bring together women+ faculty and trainees in medicine and biomedical research at the higher education institutions in the Big 10 Academic Alliance to generate a network promoting broad academic success and equity. The Global Health Interest Group is hosting the 2024 Global Health Symposium on Wednesday, April 10, at 3:30 p.m., in the Ross Auditorium. The symposium will feature:

  • Keynote by Maria Julia (Maju) Brunette, PhD titled, “On my journey to decolonizing and democratizing global health research and practice: Making a case for Ending TB”
  • Global health presentations by faculty and trainees
  • Network with other health professionals across the medical center with interests in global health

Guest speaker Monica Tellez-Fowler, Deputy CEO of the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA)

Learn more about COTA, including the transformative LinkUS mobility initiative, which will greatly help employees and patients on the Ohio State Medical Campus, as well as their upcoming service improvements to better serve our customers. She will also share her personal story as a Latina leader.

Speaker Bio:

COTA’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to promote her to President/CEO, effective on May 7, 2024.

Since joining COTA in March 2023, she has served as Chief Operating Officer and before she was promoted to Deputy CEO in May 2023. During her time at COTA, Monica has successfully negotiated an industry-leading labor contract with Transport Workers Union 208, implemented and overseen the organization’s transformative Paid Family Leave Policy, and led improvements to transit service following a national workforce shortage.

Prior to COTA, she served as the Deputy CEO/Treasurer of Clark County Public Transit Benefit Area Authority (C-TRAN) in Vancouver, Washington. While at C-TRAN, Tellez-Fowler was responsible for more than $100 million in annual operations and capital budgets and represented the authority on a $3.5 billion Interstate 5 bridge replacement megaproject across the Columbia River on the Washington-Oregon border. While at C-TRAN, the organization earned Outstanding Transportation System of the Year twice, first in 2019 and again in 2022.

Before joining C-TRAN, Tellez-Fowler was the Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Trinity Metro in Fort Worth, Texas, where she oversaw the New Starts Federal Transit Administration grant application process for TEXRail, a $1 billion, 27-mile commuter rail between downtown Fort Worth and the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Tellez-Fowler earned a Master of Business Administration from Texas A&M University and a bachelor’s of Business Administration from Tarleton State University, graduating as a distinguished scholar. She lives in Gahanna.

Research was presented by Samantha Rojas, Alejandro de la Cova, Alexis Dinello, Lou Barry, Sabrina Almanashi, Julia Monasterio, and Jorge Flores Garcia.

Lou Barry was a winner of the best poster presentation!

They spent the weekend networking with Latino physicians in the Midwest, and learning how they can bring opportunities to our communities!

Latino Buckeye Photo Competition: Celebrating our cultural identity and values!

We would like to invite HLERG members to submit photos to the first HLERG Photo Competition that will take place from September 18 to October 15, 2023, in honor of the Hispanic Heritage Month. Faculty, staff, scholars, and alumni are welcome to submit photographs that represent our history, culture, values, and roots. All photos must be the original work of the entrant and could have been taken inside or outside the United States.

Themes/categories:
1. People
2. Places
3. Food
4. Art

How to apply:
All photos can be submitted via online submission form (access here).
Each submission must include a brief narrative (150-word) explaining story and meaning of the image.
Images must be no larger than 16MD and no smaller than 1MB
Participants may submit ONE photograph in each of the categories (a max. of 4 submissions per participant)

Evaluation criteria:
Images will be assessed based on artistic expression, creativity, originality, photo commentary and the quality of the image.

Dates:
Submission phase: September 18 – October 6 (11:59 pm)
Evaluation phase: October 7 – October 11th
Award announcement: October 12th

• Awardees will be notified via email on October 11th.

• Eachawardee will receive an $25 Amazon gift card, a selection of two winners per category will be conducted.

• Awardees and their selected photos will be printed and framed as an 8″x10″ image. All images will be showcased in our website.
