Volunteering Spring 2019

This past spring I have been involved with several different volunteer opportunities including being a Physical Therapist Aid at PrimaryOne Health, participating in BuckeyeThon, and being a part of Empower Sports. As a Physical Therapist Aid I go in for two hours once a week to help clean the therapists’ space, answer phone calls, change linens, and make exercise sheets for the patients to take home. This is experience is so rewarded because I am able to learn so much about the career of Physical Therapy by observing and helping the Physical Therapist at PrimaryOne Health. This service opportunity will better prepare me for Physical Therapy school and allows me to make connections with Physical Therapists.
BuckeyeThon is a twelve hour dance marathon where all the participants raise money for Pediatric Cancer. It is one of my favorite parts of Spring semester because so many students join together to make a change and raise awareness for kids who are survivors or currently diagnosed with cancer. It is an amazing cause and an incredible experience that I am so glad I have been able to be a part of the last two years.
I also volunteer with the organization Empower Sports at OSU. Every Sunday we have an event at the ARC where each student is paired with a child with Autism and we play a variety of sports. This event is so special because it allows the children to interact and improve their social skills while also being physically active. I love this organization because throughout the semester I was able to be paired with the same child each week and really got to know him and see his trust with me increase after every event.

Volunteering Autumn ’18

Starting on October 19, 2018 I started volunteering at PrimaryOne Health Care in the Physical Therapy Department. I volunteer two hours every week and during this time I clean the Physical Therapy area by changing sheets, wiping down machines, and checking inventory in the supply closet. I also schedule interpreters for upcoming patients and make packets with exercises for the patients to do at home. PrimaryOne Health Care has a wide number of health professionals from Doctors to Physical Therapists to help people who are in need of care, but do not have the resources, such as transportation, to obtain the care they need. I learned about PrimaryOne Health Care through the Pre-PT/OT Club at OSU and I am so thankful because it has shown me that my career path of wanting to be a Physical Therapist is the right one for me because I love going in and volunteering every week and seeing how much one session can help a person physically and mentally. This service experience has impacted me as a leader because I have responsibilities and I see many people from different careers coming together to work as a team to help a patient get better. Because of service learning I am more aware of the problems that are faced in Columbus and I have greater knowledge of the different settings I can work in as a Physical Therapist and how the main characteristic a Physical Therapist has to have is compassion towards all their patients and the struggles they may face.

Year in Review Part 2

The Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholar program has opened doors personally for my Ohio State experience by connecting me with older students that have the same career goals as I do. Through the Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars track program I am able to connect with future aspiring physical therapy students to ask for advice with ways I can better my chances of being accepted to a Physical Therapy school after graduation and help with classes that they may have taken in the past. It has also led me to pursue a minor in Integrative Approaches to Health and Wellness by hearing about it from other scholars that are also pursuing that minor.
The Dunn Sport and Wellness scholar program has also aided me in my professional development by having a meeting primarily focused on resumes, interview skills, and social media presence and how it may affect your chances of getting a job. From this meeting I was able to better my resume by receiving advice on how I should phase descriptions of volunteer experience and feedback from other scholars on how to make my resume more organized and stand out among others. I learned how to prepare for an interview by doing research on the company I am applying for, practicing common interview questions, and making a list of questions to ask the interviewer. Lastly, I learned social media presence may actually aid in getting a job if I voice my opinion on matters that are important to me and take an active role in posting about issues that affect the country or world.
Life lessons that I have learned in being part of the Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholar program is that overall wellness and health is important to live a satisfying and successful life. The nine aspects of wellness all affect my life in some way and affect myself, my future, and my potential goals. I have realized how important it is to improve and maintain all of this aspects of wellness so I can be successful in my college experience, content with myself, and be the best version of myself for me and the people around me.

Dunn Scholars Welcome Week

This picture is of my Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars family at The Ohio State football stadium. From left to right is Breanne Huffman (my mom), me, Nicholas Studer, Aidan Bergsman, Grace Hippler, Mica Harr, and Kyle Prete (my dad). Missing from the picture is my other mom Madison McQuate. We were able to go onto the football field and take pictures with our families, friends, and roommates or suit mates. This picture is significant because is was an amazing experience being on the field and seeing the Ohio State stadium from that point of view. There is nothing that can really describe what the Ohio State football stadium looks like form that perspective. That experience allowed me to see what it feels like be he center of attention in such a large setting. This picture was also taken during Welcome Week and my first few days at Ohio State University, which makes it even more special and was a great way to remember my first few days at The Ohio State University. This picture will always be memorable because not many people get to experience what it is like to be on the Ohio State football stadium. It was also one of the first experiences I had with my Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars family and one of my favorite moments during Welcome Week. The entire Welcome Week experience is one I will never forget and I am grateful I was able to experience so many fun and amazing activities.

Year in Review

My first few weeks at The Ohio State University was a whirlwind of emotions and new experiences. It was difficult moving away from my family and friends, but I have made new friendships in the short time I have been at Ohio State. It was also an adjustment moving from a small town to a big city, but I found my way around and love the experiences the city has to offer. Some of the most memorable moments I have at Ohio State were made in the first week I was there. Since I am a Dunn Sport and Wellness scholar I moved in a few days early to be a part of Welcome Week. At the beginning of this week I was assigned a family that would be “my family” for my entire first year at college. We had dinners and did a ton of activities together, including a game night at the ARC and a scavenger hunt around Columbus. At the game night we played wheelchair basketball, volleyball, soccer, frisbee, and jenga while competing against other families. Even though my family did not win many games we still had a great time together. Additionally, running around Columbus and going to several places was really enjoyable and allowed me to get to know the city of Columbus better. To end the Welcome Week we had a sand volleyball tournament. Overall, this week allowed me to have a great start to my time at Ohio State and make new relationships with great people.

G.O.A.L.S.

Each of the G.O.A.L.S are qualtities that every person needs to have a successful career. Global Awareness is the most important for me. Being aware of other people’s differences will allow me to have a different perspective of the world. I plan on gaining Global Awareness by study abroad during my time at Ohio State. The other two G.O.A.L.S. that stand out to me are Leadership Development and Service Engagement. Having leadership skills will allow me to advance in my career, schooling, and community. I’m excited to learn valuable leadership skills through my Scholar’s course. I’ve always enjoyed helping others and to work toward my goal of Service Engagement I plan on joining Buck-I-Serv. The last two G.O.A.L.S., Academic Enrichment and Original Inquiry, are also essential to having a successful career and life by challenging and pushing myself to perform at my best.

I am very determined and hard-working and enjoy overcoming obstacles or challenges in my life. I enjoy helping others by volunteering through different service projects. I’m passionate about traveling and experiencing different cultures and protecting the environment. I have a very close relationship with my mom and sister and love spending time with both of them. Artifacts

I am a Horatio Alger Scholar and was able to attend the Horatio Alger Conference in March. The conference was held in Washington D.C. where I was able to meet Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. This experienced allowed me to meet many successful people and hear their stories on how they overcame adversities. I learned the skills it takes to be a successful entrepreneur and how I have the potential to really make a difference in this world. I plan on using everything I learned from this experince to make the most out of my life and to never give up when faced with adversities.
