Vision/Plan of Action

A goal I have set for myself is to have a medical research position for the autumn ’19 semester. I have began searching for open positions and will soon begin applying to labs that pertain to my interests. This is important to me so that I can have a stronger and more diverse medical background when applying to medical school. Furthermore, I love the research setting because what you are working on has the potential to change so many lives in positive ways that it is unbelievable. To achieve this goal I hope to apply to 3-5 labs this summer and be interviewed for a position before the autumn semester starts.

I also want to get involved by volunteering at a free clinic in Columbus. I am currently volunteering at Marietta Memorial Health Systems while I am home, and I hope that I will be able to further develop and utilize my skills at the Free Clinic during the next academic year. To achieve this goal, I know I will have to gather recommendations and apply to this position well in advance. Then, hopefully I will work my way up into an interactive position where I get to work with patients alongside the staff.

Abstract

I just finished my Sophomore year at The Ohio State University, and I am majoring in Health Sciences with a minor in Biology. I am coming off of a great semester where I was inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the National Society of Leadership and Success, where I achieved a leadership certification. I have now completed over 70 hours of college courses and hold a 3.69 GPA. I have enjoyed working with Jason Coronel in the School of Communication this year, but I hope to find a medical research position for the next academic year. I still plan to pursue medical school, and I am finding the pre-med coursework very interesting and stimulating. I am thankful for all the opportunities Ohio State has given me, and I am excited for a couple more great years at OSU!

Skeletal Adaptations that Contribute to Bipedalism in Humans

Literature_Review_Bio_1114

This is a paper I wrote for my Biology course in the autumn ’18 semester. It is a literature review looking at some of the most crucial adaptations to the skeletal system that have allowed for the modern human stature and gait. I was interested in this topic because of my orthopedic interests, but the evolutionary side of this assignment was fascinating as well. I hope to use this information in the future during medical school and my career by recalling why we see the physical features we do on people today: they have been selected for, typically to provide a specific function that allows us to be efficient, protected, and mobile.

2018/2019 Year in Review

In autumn ’18 I began a research position in the School of Communication, which gives me valuable experience in a research setting. Some tasks I have been assigned are testing participants, data entry, editing, and any other duties assigned to me around the office. I think this opportunity is great for me because it has helped give me foundational experience in research, which I will be able to use for many years as I further my research abilities in labs more tailored to my medical interests.

In addition to my research position, my academics have been very interesting as I have taken 25+ hours of science classes including Biology, Organic Chemistry with labs, Anatomy, Physiology, and my Health Sciences major coursework. It has been difficult but extremely interesting and gratifying to study for these courses. I am excited to continue my science background next semester as I begin Biochemistry and Physics. I am still on the pre-med track and soon will have to begin preparing for the MCAT!

Year in Review

Semester in Review:

This semester was great for getting acclimated to OSU and the college lifestyle. I met a lot of great friends during many experiences throughout the semester. One experience that I particularly enjoyed was a scholars event to tour the Animal Hospital here at OSU. On the tour we got to see the many veterinary facilities, as well as learn about what its like to work in this field. This experience opened my eyes to a field that I had never thought of and taught me pressing issues in the field of veterinary medicine. Many other experiences, with Biological Sciences Scholars, student organizations, and community service, have all helped build my character and made me a more mature, professional student throughout my first semester.

G.O.A.L.S.

The goals that I have set for my college career closely aligns with the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S. Currently, I am begginning my academic enrichmennt in college this year as a freshman. However, I look forward to furthering my academic enrichment outside of the classroom, with study sessions or academic events. My goal for next year is to become involved in a research project where I can demonstrate original inquiry. Similarly, I hope that during my junior year I may study abroad and help further my global awareness to be able to expreience the diversity of a different culture. This year, I am joining clubs ond organizations to see what groups I enjoy and care about. Eventually, I would like to hold a leadership position within a group on campus to show leadership development. In high school, I accumulated over 100 service hours and I hope to continue my devotion to service in college. I hope to find a service organization soon that will allow me to perform work in the community for the entirety of my college career. I hope to fulfill all my goals to develop myself, to help others, and to build a competitive resume that will stand out.

Medical Ethics Final-1mm31ml

This paper is written on the current standard that is held in medical ethics today, which was not always the case. It displays my commitment to academics and relates to my future career in the medical field by discussing the ethical aspect of the field.

This picture is from a Biological Sciences Scholars Study Session that I attended at Barrett House. This session helped promote academic excellence and collaboration by providing a great learning and community based environment.

About Me

I am a Scholars Undergraduate Student at The Ohio State University. While I am on a pre-med track, I am majoring in Health Science within the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. I enjoy exercising at the gym and aspire to become an Orthopedic Surgeon after medical school.
