Nicole’s G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness
Diversity and social awareness are two standards I hold very dear, as I have experienced firsthand the repercussions of intolerance with regards to people’s unique differences. To help contribute to Ohio State’s inclusive atmosphere, I will promote diversity in my involvement in the English Undergraduate Organization by facilitating dialogues and themed meetings to shed light on marginalized groups and social issues. Also, I seek to nurture my own global awareness through a study abroad experience, one in which I travel to a European country (or many) and study the fabric of culture that contributes to the creation of storylines.

Original Inquiry
The use of movement as a form of expression is something I have employed throughout my fifteen years as a dancer. I am part of a performing dance group that explores the movement variations that contribute to different styles of dance, producing original choreography from members to perform in many spheres. Also, my intent of pursuing the creative writing concentration within the English Department will be materialized in the form of a portfolio, a composition of several pieces of creative work. I aim to craft fiction short stories, dabbling in my ability to formulate a full book, during my time at Ohio State.

Academic Enrichment
Being a student labeled “talented and gifted” starting in early elementary school, I have always held myself to unhealthily high standards in terms of academic performance. I pride myself in my intellect and have historically used it as a defining feature of my self-worth. Therefore, at Ohio State, my primary goal is to cultivate my skills as a writer in all styles of writing. I seek to challenge myself by broadening my horizons and utilizing intentional style-shifts to convey different meanings. However, my overarching academic goal is to discover a balance between my homework and my free time – one I am yet to find – in order to be a happy, productive individual as opposed to being one or the other.

Leadership Development
Through my pursuit of independence, I intend to apply for work next semester, possibly for the role of an office assistant. I have the characteristics of a leader mixed up inside me, somewhere behind my introverted outer shell, and it is through positions of responsibility that allow me to show my ability to lead. In a more specific sense, I am applying to be the Communications Chair for the English Undergraduate Association, thus utilizing a culmination of my skills and interests to help shape the public’s perception of the club.

Service Engagement
As I establish myself in Columbus, I want to do more outreach in the community, engaging specifically with LGBTQ+ youth to provide guidance and a listening ear. Coming from a background with ample experience of intolerance and hate, I want to repurpose my heartache to help navigate others’ pain. Keeping in line with the English Undergraduate Organization theme that I have apparently established, I also aim to involve the club in book-related community service projects, such as book fairs, library events, or children’s book donations.
