Educating the Horn

EDUCATING THE HORN

On April 9th, 2016, I attended an event ran by the EESO and SSA that discussed the topic of mental illness. The event was made up of various student and guest speaker performances ranging from spoken word poetry to cultural dances. The event meant a lot to me because it made me realize the struggles that people with mental illnesses in different cultures go through. People in every culture experience mental illness and many cultures often shame people with these problems or ignore them, so they are forced to suffer.

This event brought to my attention the importance of advocating for correct treatment regarding mental health in every culture. No matter what culture someone is a part of, they should be able to speak freely about their struggles. I was reminded that helping people always goes beyond culture. We all should help one another in many issues, not only mental health. I will always think of that in my future endeavors. Its a skill that is most vital when working in such a diverse world.

My First College Research Paper

Research Paper

This semester was the first time I have ever taken a legit college writing class. I love to write, both academically and creatively, and that is why I am choosing my first research paper at OSU as my artifact.

This paper means a great bit to me, because not only did I enjoy writing it, but I learned a great deal of information regarding academic writing. In the paper, I analyze a prominent theme in the short story Sh’kohl by Colum McCann. The assignment required that I incorporate scholarly research articles, which was a new experience for me.

The writing skills I gained through this assignment and the class in general will make a substantial difference in my future assignments. From perfecting MLA format to learning new ways to write an argument, I am confident that the experience I have collected will continue to benefit my academic career, as well as my career beyond attending university.

Sexual Assault in the Criminal Justice System

Violence Awareness Week Flyer

On Thursday, March 31st , I attended an event that was headed by my close friend. The topic of the event was sexual assault in the criminal justice system. It was one of the most memorable events that I have been to so far.

The goals behind this event addresses an issue that is very prevalent today. Not only did it delve into the process of a regular case of sexual assault through the justice system, but it brought up many of the injustices that the victims face. What I enjoyed most about this event was the open discussion that ensued after the presentation. Moments like that, where a group of people who are genuinely interested in a topic and strive to learn more through open discussion, are what make my college experience worth it. I have learned that the best way to become more aware and knowledgable about a topic is to be open with others. It is a beautiful thing when a group of people help each other better recognize a problem and look for solutions. When that occurs, any goal is possible. That skill will stay with me throughout my life and I am proud to be able to use it extensively.
