This is a picture of me in my hat. I got this hat for Christmas as a sophomore in high school. There is nothing entirely characteristic about it, it is just a black knit cap that keeps me warm and hides my hair in the morning. However, as I have moved out of my house, it serves as a symbol for my family. When I wear it on my head, I am reminded to keep home in my thoughts.

About Me

IMG_3343

My name is Sam Hickman. I am a Freshman at The Ohio State University, and a Pre-Public Health Major. I am originally from Worthington, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. I graduated with Honors from Thomas Worthington High School in 2015. I hope to one day work with a local government to advocate for public health policies for homeless people, preferably in an urban environment.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: I have been trying to extend my Global Awareness through my participation in classes and organizations that promote diversity and sharing of culture. I plan to continue to expand my knowledge and awareness of the world by communicating and listening to ideas wherever I go.

Original Inquiry: Though only a Freshman at OSU, my classes have already provided a lot of opportunity to inquire about my interests. I have been able to develop research questions pertaining to Public Health and Sociology and have learned a lot through the research process. In the future I plan to develop these questions outside of the class and to work on constantly learning.

Academic Enrichment: I am a Public Health major, I plan to go on to get my MHA (Masters of Health Administration.) I believe my course work, even my GE courses, work towards this major, as they help me learn about the world and how people operate, while also learning about my field. With my knowledge from the classes, I will be able to be well rounded, knowing about health and society, but also about history, science, math, and business. This will allow me to be more effective in my job, as I will be able to solve problems from multiple angles.

Leadership Development and Service Engagement: I am very involved within my scholars group, The Mount Leadership Society. I am a Legacy Week Team Captain for Team Poverty, meaning I am in charge of developing projects for agencies around Columbus with a team of 20 Mounties. I am also an OA, and have applied to be an RA to help facilitate community within Residence Life. Mount is also committed to serving others, I have completed a service project each month while I have been at OSU, and will continue to do that throughout the year. I plan to continue developing my dedication to service and leadership through Mount in the years to come.
