Year in Review

In the Spring semester of 2017, I did something I never thought I would do: join Greek Life. Throughout my life, even up until the Fall semester of 2016, I never even considered looking into joining a fraternity. Nevertheless, an older friend from high school invited me to a few recruitment events for his fraternity and I found that I enjoyed the members and their ideals. After a lengthy internal debate, I decided to rush and was recently initiated to the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, whose mission is to “Champion a lifelong commitment to brotherhood, learning, ethical leadership, and exemplary character.” Looking back, I have no regrets about joining Greek Life and I am convinced my college life and even life after college is greatly improved through the new friends, opportunities, connections, and more.

Furthermore, in this Spring semester of 2017, I have joined a newly established club named GrOSU. The club, created by fellow Green Engineering Scholars and high school friends, is aimed at creating and educating others in safe and efficient ways to farm and produce food products. Since the club has just recently been created, the amount of opportunities have been lacking. Over the summer, I plan to travel the 2.5 hours with the high school friends in order to help set up a foundation for the club for the fall semester of 2017. Once the academic year begins in the fall, I plan to stay in GrOSU and be as involved as possible in order to better the club and the community overall.

Student Farms will improve the community

GOALS Description:

  • Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .
  • Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
  • Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
  • Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
  • Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.

My GOALS:

Global Awareness:

Being an immigrant from England to the United States, I consider myself appreciative and understanding of individuals and their experiences. Having visited several countries in Europe, I have experienced cultures different than my own and appreciate the diversity. However, I hope to expand my appreciation and awareness of other individuals and their cultures as this aspect of a person can always be improved. My goal to achieve is to join an organization in which I can interact and experience a wide array of individuals and their experiences in life.

I have made strides to achieve my Global Awareness goal to be involved in an organization in which I can interact, experience, and understand other individuals and their experiences throughout life. To exemplify, I have applied to and will hopefully be accepted to serve as a chair position on the Greek Programming Board. By serving in this organization, I would be interacting with countless individuals both in Greek life and not in Greek life. Furthermore, I would be organizing events for Greek organizations, thereby needing to understand the ideals and interests of the individuals in each organization. Also, I am participating in the STEP program next year, meaning I have the opportunity to use the potential funds to study abroad and further my appreciation for other cultures and individuals.

Original Inquiry:

Academic Enrichment:

Leadership Development:

In the past, I have exhibited multiple aspects of my leadership skills in a variety of activities. For example, I was a part of my high school’s freshman mentor-ship program for three years in which I aided high school freshmen in their transition to high school. In the future, I plan to continue this type of leadership by becoming some sort of student adviser to help college freshmen in their transition to college. Furthermore, in high school, I was the captain of the varsity soccer team; I plan to continue this leadership skill by joining a club and working my way to obtain an important role in the club.

Throughout this my first year at OSU, I have made steps to achieve my Leadership Development goal set previously. To explain, I have joined the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity; I have gotten involved this past semester and expect to gain a chair position and potentially an Executive Board position in my future semesters. Furthermore, I have joined the newly established club GrOSU and hope to get involved and become a leader in the club. Lastly, I hope to become a Green Engineering Scholars freshman mentor next year. Although I have not necessarily reached my Leadership goals, I have made efforts to reach them.

Automotive Fuels Project

In this project, two group members and I studied the comparisons of electric, gas, and diesel powered vehicles in the all important aspects of cost, performance, environmental impact, and emissions. This topic is relatable to the vast majority of the world as the traditional vehicle power sources of fossil fuels are depleting as well as negatively polluting our environment. Overall, we found that the diesel powered vehicles are more cost efficient in the long run, as well as more environmentally friendly and efficient when compared to electric and gas powered vehicles. Therefore, we believe that more research and time should be spent on even further improving diesel vehicles rather than the environmentally and economically harmful electric powered vehicles.

About Me

IMG_20160505_102908

My name is Oliver Hesmondhalgh and I am a first year student from Aurora, Ohio. Currently in the Pre-Chemical Engineering program, I hope to be accepted to the Chemical Engineering major in the fall of 2017. Originally, I was born in England and lived there for the first two years of my life until my father had a job offer in Cleveland, Ohio; therefore, I do not have a British accent. Living in Ohio for the majority of my childhood and being surrounded by Ohio State fans and alumni, I came to love The Ohio State University before I even applied.

In my high school career, I participated in Varsity soccer and tennis while being a member of the school’s National Honor Society and of the Freshman Mentorship Program. I plan to utilize and further develop the skills and abilities I practiced throughout my high school career. For example, I hope to be a Freshman Mentor for the Green Engineering Scholars program in the next academic year.
