Intro to Paula

My name is Paula Hernandez and I am from New Jersey. I am a Biology major and Portuguese minor on a pre-Med track. My life goals consists of attending medical school, becoming a pediatrician, and traveling the world to service others. My love for children has come from the many kids in my family that I have had the chance to take care of. I also spent time in high school volunteering at the Children’s Specialized Hospital which made me want to specialize in pediatric psychology in the future. My decision to minor in Portuguese comes from my desire to travel in the future. In addition, Spanish is my first language and those two are closely related, therefore expanding my knowledge would not hurt me. I decided to attend OSU because it was the best opportunity for me financially. It has proven to provide me with many opportunities and I look forward to the rest of my years here.

Good Neighbor Picnic

As part of a service project for my Early Arrival Program, I had the opportunity to volunteer at an annual event in Columbus called the Good Neighbors Picnic. It is planned by a committee of leaders in the city who represent homeless facilities. Their mission is to create a special day for the homeless and increase overall awareness of poverty issues. At the picnic there are several stations, some include shopping, food, and games. I contributed by volunteering for the shopping station. Throughout the year, the committee collected donations of all kinds of clothing. They then sorted it out by gender and size and gave each volunteer a specific person to help “shop”. I engaged in conversation, learning a lot about these special people and ultimately helping them out in the end by providing them with clothes and supplies for the upcoming winter. I had several “clients” and enjoyed my experience tremendously. It was the second service project I took part in since arriving at OSU and I know it’s going to always hold a place in my heart as a favorite. I plan on participating in the upcoming years and I recommend others to come out and do it also.

G.O.A.L.S

Global Awareness

One reason for me deciding to minor in Portuguese is because of my dream to travel the world. I plan to learn many more languages in the future.

Original Inquiry

I want to make connections outside the university and be able to explore and discover things beyond our community at Ohio State.

Academic Enrichment

School has always been and will continue to be my top priority. I will take classes that challenge me and stimulate my mind.

Leadership Development

Becoming involved in clubs and actually seeking leadership positions within these organizations will help me achieve this goal.

Service Engagement

I will always use my free time to find ways I can better my community because that is my personality.

Other goals:

I want to network and have connections in the medical field, because it’s not always what you know, it’s who you know. I plan to continue academic excellence in the classroom. I want to learn more languages and be able to travel and provide service around the world.
