Year in Review

My sophomore year presented me with more opportunities that I could have ever hoped for. Although I struggled the most academically and in balancing the most that I have so far, I feel as I have evolved as an overall person more than ever before. I have grown tremendously as a researcher and am now conducting experiments that I could have never even dreamed off. I have also broadened my knowledge of basic science in the research lab as well as just day to day lab knowledge that I did not know. Furthermore, I have evolved as a leader. I became Director of Philanthropy for Zeta Tau Alpha fraternity and have had the pleasure of being the head of our Breast Cancer Awareness and Education programs. This experience has not only allowed me to be the face of a topic I am very passionate about but also deal with girls all over the spectrum and become a more patient and accessible person. Overall I feel as though I have a lot to improve on still but hope to be in the right track

G.O.A.L.S.

Mostly everything I take part in and hope to take part in throughout my life fits in perfectly with the G.O.A.L.S explained by honors and scholars here at Ohio State.

Regarding Global Awareness, I have just recently declared a double major in Romance Studies which is the study of Romance Languages. Spanish is my first language, and I speak Italian fluently and French proficiently. I hope that my background with all these languages will give me the ability to travel the world and practice medicine in different environments and cultures while still being able to have good patient communication. I have found that even in my small duties as a volunteer at the hospital or at my research lab, that by being able to speak other languages I open so many windows for myself in regards of who I can communicate and who I can help.

Original Inquiry is something I partake in everyday while conducting research on breast cancer cells at the medical center. It keeps me motivated and excited to be learning about the Scientific Method and about new up and coming research methods and strategies. Every week in the lab, I perform at least one new experiment that I had not previously done. A lot of the experiments also have not been done many times in the world so it is a huge privilege for me to take part in them.

Academic Enrichment obviously is very important to me and I strive to be the best I can when it comes to this field. I aspire to one day be an MD/PhD and be able to be a surgeon as I have dreamed of as well as pursue research which I am very passionate about. I understand that in order to achieve this, the academics have to be flawless and I need to stand out from the rest.

Regarding Academic Enrichment I have taken the time to interview and get to know throughly my research lab coordinator, Anna Tessari, MD.

Anna was born in Italy, where she studied and earned her medical degree from the University of Ferrara as a medical oncologist. She came to Ohio State to complete her post-doctoral training, after which she won a Pelotonia Fellowship and was able to prolong her stay. Her fellowship came to an end at the beginning of the summer, at which time she was asked to stay at Ohio State full time as a Research Scientist.

Anna’s research focuses on the involvement of miR135-b on breast cancer as well as the involvement of the gene RanBP9 on lung cancer.

What Anna likes the most about her research, is how transitional the things she is studying are. Such as how the cells that she studies are directly from patients and the aim is to find treatments to use directly on patients.

As far as Leadership Development, I practice frequently while fulfilling my duties of Neuroscience Ambassador and being a good role model to younger generation of scientists. As a Neuroscience ambassador, I guide incoming freshman through the journey of being a neuroscience major at OSU.

Finally Service Engagement is what I mostly focus my time on, whether at the hospital or working at the suicide hotline line, I aim to serve my community as much as I can now as an undergraduate and eventually as a doctor in my community and around the world in the future. In the hospital, I have volunteered in many areas such as the Emergency Department, the lobby, and currently the Ambulatory Surgery unit.

Above is a picture of a migration assay that I performed at my laboratory. In my lab, I investigate the effect of miR135b on breast cancer clone cells. Above is shown the difference in migration capability between regular cancer cells and cells that have mir135b knocked out of their genome. This experiment was one of the first ever that I was able to conduct on my own. It is very important to me because being able to conduct an elaborate experiment takes a lot of time and trust by your supervisors to trust you to be in charge of samples, reagents, lab space, etc.

This last year I have really found a huge passion for research. I am now beginning to consider a career path which could involve research. What I have learned the most since starting in the lab is how it really is necessary to give other commitments up in order to be able to be fully committed mentally and physically to one thing you are very passionate about.

Although my service project is about working at the suicide hotline, the time I put into my research lab is also a form of service because I do not earn any money or anything from it so that is why I have shown the picture above.

About Me

I was originally born in Caracas, Venezuela. I moved to the United States at age 10, when I started attending the Kings Local Schools in Kings Mills, Ohio. I graduated from Kings High School in 2014 with a 4.12 GPA. I am  now a second year Neuroscience and Romance Studies student at The Ohio State University. My career plans include going to medical school to become a heart surgeon and potentially get my PhD in Europe while doing cancer research. I currently do research at the Medical Center involving the role of microRNA in breast cancer as well as the role of other proteins in various cancers. I volunteer at the Wexner Medical Center as well as Suicide Prevention Services through Ohio Health. I am also a Neuroscience Ambassador and a Health Science Scholar at the University. During the summer I will be spending my time researching, working as a disability aid, and volunteering both locally and abroad in Spain.
