10/9/20 EXP 1100 Instructions

Today is all about understanding how your advising report, degree audit, and GE curriculum guide work together. These are foundational tools for planning your spring schedule (and entire 4-year course plan). Next week (Week 8) you’ll learn the intricacies of your parallel majors, but this week, we need to make sure you have a strong foundation (like how the base of a pyramid has to be strong to hold up the rest of the stones).

While your answers to these questions will be unique to you, you can (and should!) help each other with finding information on your GE list, figure out what categories mean, etc.

That’s why you’re in the breakout groups in the first place. (In an on-campus class, you would be moving your desks to sit together. This is just the online version of that.)

Supplies: Advising Report, Degree Audit (one for both of your parallel majors), GE list (for both of your parallel majors).

Create a document (Word, Pages, Notability, anything except a Google Doc) and put your name & the date (10/9/20) on the top. Number your answers for each question.

  1. What information can be found on both your advising report AND at the top of page 1 of your degree audit? (There will be multiple answers; put them all here.)
  2. Looking at your advising report, count how many courses you’re in right now (not the credit hours, but the actual # of courses you’re actually taking this fall). Write that number as your answer to #2.
  3. Using that list of classes you just found on your advising report, look at your degree audit. Circle or highlight or arrow (somehow mark, I don’t care how, just make it easy to identify) the classes that you’re in right now. (Hint: They’ll say AU20.) Some of you may see them on page 1 AND in the GE categories, or just under the GE categories. What I’m interested in is the part you can see in the GE categories.
  4. Repeat Step #3 for the Degree Audit for your other parallel major. The point of this is to see how the classes you’re in right now apply to the GE categories you need for one of your parallel majors. Once you’ve done that, write “done” for #3. (You’ll submit both degree audits later during class so I’ll see the markings there.)
  5. Using your GE guides, are there any courses that would apply to GE categories for both of your parallel majors? List one as your answer to #5.
  6. Now run one of your audits in HTML format and one in PDF format. Tell me the differences you notice between them: Which one is easier to read? Which one do you prefer, why?
  7. Last step: In Participation for Week 7 (TODAY), submit

                    a. the document you’ve been typing in

                    b. both audits that you marked on for #3 and #4 above. Still do this step even if you submitted an audit in

                         Group 2.  The end!
