Henry Co. 4-H Advisory Council – Essay Lamb Contest
- This contest is open to 4-H members or FFA chapter members who are interested in raising and exhibiting a market lamb at the Henry County Fair and meet the guidelines of contest. Market lambs will be awarded to individuals who are selected winners of this essay contest. Essays will be evaluated by a committee represented by Senior Fair Board, Junior Fair Board, 4-H and FFA.
- Deadline for submitting an essay is March 1st of the current year. The essay should focus on why you would like to raise and exhibit a market lamb as part of the Henry County Junior Fair and two qualities you possess that would make you a winner of the contest. The number of lambs available is dependent on the number of sponsorships 4-H Advisory Council attains for the current year.
Eligibility:
- Youth must be 8 or 9 and in the 3rd grade through 18 years of age as of January 1st of the current year.
- Be enrolled in a Henry County 4-H club or Henry County FFA chapter and actively participate in said club or chapter.
- Be a first-year market lamb project member (having never enrolled in a market lamb project or exhibited a market lamb previously) and currently enrolled in a market lamb project.
- Be able to provide facilities to house and feed a market lamb.
- Provide their signature and that of their parent/guardian at the bottom of the essay they submit.
Be sure to include member age as of, address, email address, telephone number and the address of location where your lamb will be kept.
Rules:
One essay may be submitted according to the following age divisions and must be within the designated number of words for the essay:
Division 1: Ages 8, 9, 10, 11, 12= 100-200 words
Division 2: Ages 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18= 200-300 words
If selected as a winner, Henry County 4-H Advisory Council (sponsor of the contest) transfers all liability associated with the animal to the winner at the time of pick-up. In the event that the animal dies, Henry County 4-H Advisory Council will not replace the animal or allow the winner to re-enter the competition the following year.
Winners will be notified by email no later than March 15th of the current year and will be provided the sponsor’s name and address for his/her lamb.
Families will be contacted with the pickup date at a later time.
Member must complete Quality Assurance education and the Market Lamb Skillathon in July in order to be eligible to exhibit the Essay Market Lamb.
Members winning an Essay Market Lamb must enter the Essay Market Lamb class in the Henry County Junior Fair Sheep Show. First and Second place Essay Market Lamb class winners will be eligible to participate in the Grand Champion (final) drive.
Essay Market Lamb exhibitors are eligible for market lamb premiums accordingly.
Random farm visit/s will be conducted as to lend support to the member.
