Using a Campus Resource

The campus resource I used was the “Let’s Talk” session CCS hosted at the Ohio Union on Thursday afternoons. “Let’s Talk” is an informal “counseling” session hosted at the Union every Thursday where students can talk to licensed mental health professionals that actually work at CCS in a 15-20 minute session. When I attended the session two weeks ago, I didn’t even remember that I would be able to use my visit to write this post, so I killed two birds with one stone without even realizing it! This is a kind of personal, and I’m doing better now, but when I went two weeks ago, I was having a very rough week. I had two big project for my two main design classes due and a midterm, and I felt like I didn’t have enough time or motivation to do anything. I was extremely stressed and just felt like crying because I was so overwhelmed. I knew I didn’t have the time to make an appointment at CCS for an official counseling service, and while on their website, I saw their “Let’s Talk” session and told myself to make the time for it that week before one of my classes.

I did not have to wait very long, maybe five minutes, since I got there right as they started seeing students at 2pm and was only the second person there. I didn’t really know what to expect. I’ve always struggled with some anxiety and depression, but I never reached out for help when I was feeling extremely stressed or unmotivated because I didn’t have resources that were readily available. Going to this resource, I was hoping to just talk openly with someone about how I was feeling and truly have them listen. I wasn’t really expecting advice or tips on how to handle my stress, I just wanted to tell someone how I was feeling without fear of how they would react. The counselor was extremely friendly and welcoming, and did exactly what I wanted her to: listen. She was very understanding gave me some helpful tips for managing stress and anxiety, while also making me aware of the other mental health resources CCS offers before giving me some words of encouragement. Overall, I had a very positive experience and would definitely go again in hopes for the same experience (since I hear CCS is inconsistent). 

Like I mentioned before, I didn’t even realize I was visiting a campus resource before looking at this assignment. I didn’t really know about many of the campus resources, really just about CCS. I think Ohio State is doing better about promoting good mental health for its students, so I felt like I was properly exposed to the idea of going to CCS. However, I wish they would advertise their events and services other than counseling, which I haven’t read the best reviews of. The good thing about going to the “Let’s Talk” workshop is that it was appointment-free and fits nicely into student schedules. As for more or different services I think OSU should offer, I’m not exactly sure what I would want to see since this is the first time I felt I needed to make use of one of the resources on campus. One thing I would like to see is more resources for commuters other than a lounge and kitchen area. Maybe some events or workshops for commuters to make the most of OSU, which they offer, but sparingly. 

Visiting the “Let’s Talk” session was very helpful and is definitely a resource I see myself using in the future.

Attending a Campus STEM Seminar

For my Campus STEM Seminar, I attended a BioPhysics seminar about the trade-offs in the evolution of antibiotic resistance hosted by Edral Toprak, a Doctorate researcher at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. 

I attended the seminar alone since it was between two of my classes, but I did see some familiar faces from the STEM Scholars group, so I was not the only undergraduate student there. However, it did seem like a lot of the people at the seminar were older students who I assume were grad students or fourth year students, along with many professors. I did not necessarily feel out of place, but I definitely didn’t feel confident raising my hand to ask a question. The seminar was a lot like a lecture with mostly the speaker doing the talking, filtering through some questions as he went, so there was not much of an opportunity to talk to others (I’m not outgoing enough for that anyway!) 

The topic of the seminar and information was definitely way over my head. While the basic structure everyone was familiar with in regards to research, like having various controls and variables, a set process in place, as well as very clear expected results and analysis of data, I think the seminar required a high level of knowledge in order to understand. The speaker simply mentioned names of the different antibiotics and the mutations they created in the experiment, focusing a lot more on the analysis of the results. While that makes sense for the older students and professors in the room who have a foundation for what this kind of research would be, if the speaker were to be in front of a crowd of younger undergrad students, he would definitely need to add more background information in order for the test results to make sense. Despite my confusion, I did learn some things! Antibiotic resistance is an ever-growing threat and has been partially responsible for a percentage of cancer deaths. Additionally, the more mutations in cells correlated higher antibiotic resistance since the fitness of the mutational organisms is decreased. 

Since I had never attended any kind of STEM Seminar before, I was not sure what to expect. I’m kind of glad that it was more of a lecture-style seminar because I was a bit more comfortable and less anxious knowing I was not going to be forced to interact with anyone. While this kind of research definitely isn’t exactly what I would expect to find in Industrial Design, there are some correlations. While Physics may only focus on new scientific discoveries to bring about further understanding of current concepts, combining it with Biology in a medical setting it what relates it to Industrial Design. Researching antibiotic resistance will bring about new medical discoveries that will improve treatment methods for people who might have cancer or other medical conditions that require constant medication. This research will improve the lives of people, which is what Industrial Design focuses on since it is about user-centered design and designing things for the benefit of people and their needs. 

I think becoming involved in undergraduate research is extremely valuable as it can bring on new opportunities, skills, experiences, and knowledge necessary for all types of jobs and disciplines. While being an active undergraduate student in an academic community will certainly bring merit and many networking possibilities, I don’t think it is the only way to find people and opportunities that align with one’s interest. All in all, I think this was a great glimpse into the world of BioPhysics and STEM Seminars that focus on research. It was not necessarily my cup of tea, but this experience has encouraged me to seek out seminars related to Industrial Design that might expose me to undergraduate research opportunities.

About Me

Hey! My name is Melissa Henriquez and I am a Design student intending to major in Industrial Design. I am proudly a first-generation Hispanic American, with my parents originating from Mexico and Honduras. Some of my interests and passions include photography, music, and bullet journaling. 

In high school, I devoted my time to leading a FIRST Robotics Competition team as a team captain. I was in charge of team operations, awards, community outreach, as well as overseeing the business, administrative, and marketing groups. Through robotics, I also became an active member in my community, organizing library workshops, volunteering for an after-school STEM club for middle schoolers, advocating for STEM education, and much more. 

I am currently a first-year Design student pursuing a major in Industrial Design. I’ve always had a passion for STEM, art, and helping others. This makes Industrial Design the perfect major for me because it gives me a creative outlet with STEM and art where I can design something new or improve an existing product to make our world a better place. 

For the past two years, I have worked at Target. This past summer, I helped teach a series of week-long STEM camps for elementary and middle schoolers at KIPP Columbus. These experiences have allowed me to develop professionally,  improving interpersonal skills like communication, collaboration, time management, responsible decision making and more.

This ePortfolio will serve as a way to document my experiences at Ohio State and reflect on my personal, academic, and professional growth. I hope to share my ePortfolio with my peers, mentors, faculty, and future employers to exhibit my character growth and passion for achieving my goals.
