Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Delete these instructions and add your own post.

Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .
Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.]

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. GENETICALLY MODIFIED CROPS

Above is link to a project that was completed for my first year scholars seminar. The project was to research a topic that was interesting to me in the field of Green Engineering. I decided to do my project on genetically modified organisms. The main question that was asked was if GMOs were harmful to consume, and how they affect the overall nutrition of the food we are consuming. What I discovered upon research is that GMOs have both benefits and drawbacks. Going into this project, I was a relatively strong believer that genetically modified foods provided little to no nutritional benefit. While researching, I discovered that this thought was not particularly wrong, nor was it 100% correct. Most sources that listed the benefits were very vague when talking about nutritional benefits. Although these sources showed plenty of benefits outside the realm of nutrition, such as herbicide resistance or virus tolerance, when it came to nutrition most sources would simply say “increase in nutritional value,” or something along those lines. Given that there were not many specifics given, I still find myself believing that GMOs do not provide much nutritional benefit, however I do find there are more benefits than I originally believed. This project was very useful to me because it helped me gain more knowledge on a topic that I am particularly interested in, as well as showed me how initial opinions and judgements can be wrong, which can be relevant in many more situations than just this project.

About Me

My name is Brook Hemmelgarn and I am from Cincinnati, OH. I went to Kings High School, where I gained a multitude of meaningful experiences that would prepare me for my college years. The most significant and worthwhile experiences I had during high school took place during my Engineering I and Engineering II classes that I took during my junior and senior years. These courses well prepared me for college since I am currently pursuing a major in biomedical engineering. During these two classes, I got a lot of time working on hands-on activities, which is very helpful because most engineering projects in the future will be more hands-on than theoretical. I thoroughly enjoyed both of these courses, not only because they helped to prepare me for my future endeavors, but because it was also pleasurable to get to work alongside other potential engineering students and see how everybody’s individual ideas could come together to make a final product. These classes showed me both the benefits and the downsides to working in teams, which prepared me for the engineering classes in college, being as they are all group-project based. During my time at OSU, I hope to heighten my engineering knowledge, as well as potentially get into undergraduate/graduate research at some point. My main goal while I am here is to enjoy my time while also gaining more knowledge about myself and how I prefer to learn. Currently I find myself to be more of a visual learner. I hope to expand my learning capabilities to better understand the information I am given in class, making it easier for me to work through problems on my own outside of the classroom setting. I am both nervous and excited to take on the rest of my years at OSU.
