Student Organizations–MSE Club

Being a Materials Science Engineer, it is increasingly difficult to find student organizations that I can truly involve myself in–being such a small major, it is very easy to feel left out of a lot of the big engineering clubs such as Buckeye Space Launch Initiative and ISE Club–the Student Involvement Fair was a big eye opener, it showed how much of a minority my department really was, and how small my field really is. My lovely Academic Advisor, Megan, really understood this situation; Megan made real efforts to bring as many student orgs to our survey along with Professional Organizations such as the AWS and Materials Advantage. Along the way, I learned about the Foundry Club, the Rover club, and the MSE Club, a club for general MSE Majors. With the Foundry Club on the fence and the Rover Club out of my interests, I trekked to the MSE Club to feel out the situation and learn about the organization itself. When I arrived, I was immediately impressed and flattered by the organization at which I found myself, as they had a holy treatise among their presence. It was in fact free food, free food that was good to that exact. One of the benefits of a small organization was already revealing itself–community. MSE Club is small. It is a fractional representation of the MSE department and its participants, a little group of defactos and long time runners of MSE. The meeting itself was pleasant, it merely acted as an informational meeting discussing the multiple info sessions(which I will go into detail a little later) we had approaching the ENG Expo, the purpose and body of MSE(who was made up of a diverse cast of seniors, juniors, and sophomores), along with any of the ‘large-scale’ events such as conferences and presentations the MSE Club was going to make an appearance at. Cross talk was common, and things got out of hand quick if instigated. In fact, besides outlining the club itself, the majority of the time spent meeting was left for brainstorming what the club should be about–What Restaurants would you want to go to as a organization? What Activities do you want to be involved in with eachother? Will we host any volunteering events? The informality of the meeting was pleasant, relaxing, and a Far Cry of the rest of my academic week. Yet, this did not mean the organization did not have a serious side–the rest of the meetings lined up for September were entirely info sessions with recruiters, and I am talking Naval Nuclear, GE Aviation, Owens Coring, BPML–serious, competitive jobs all looking for interns or future employees. I even went to one of these info sessions, the NNL meeting to be specific. Getting the singular attention of these reputable companies was definitely an opportunity. So far, MSE Club has been a success, and I can’t wait for our next meeting. Join MSE!
