Principles of Prudent Prescribing of Opioids and Other Controlled Drugs

In 2023, Dr. Theodore Parran, Co-Medical Director of Rosary Hall and several other SUD Treatment Programs in Northeast Ohio, presented a series of six sessions focusing on controlled drugs and safe prescribing principles gleaned from three decades of offering the remedial Intensive Course in Controlled Drug Prescribing. Subtopics include pain management, opioid and benzodiazepine pharmacology and withdrawal, maintenance of boundaries and safe patient selection, monitoring and patient interventions for problematic issues, and case discussions with Q&A and skill practices. The presentations are geared toward Physicians, Advanced Care Practitioners, Residents, Nurses, Technicians, Social Workers, and EMTs.

The learning objectives are:

  • Describe the commonalities of controlled drugs
  • Outline the natural history of SUD
  • Demonstrate clinical reasoning skills related to controlled drug prescribing decisions
