Week 11-12: Blog & iMovie

For this assignment, I ended up making animated illustrations to the song “Rivers and Roads” by The Head and the Heart. Since the assignment was to tell a story, I decided to choose a song that just has a story. To me, this song is about two people who grow up together and are really close, but as they get older they grow apart and go their separate ways. To illustrate that, I had a truck on the road and a canoe on the river. As the song goes they stay pretty even though one does get ahead of the other at certain times, but by the end of the song, they cross one final time before they go off their separate ways, never seeing each other again.

Week 9-10: Self Portraits

So this is my self-portrait. I tried to keep it as simple as possible while still putting in layers. The most obvious part to this would be the bride and groom emoji represent my wife and me. The next layer in this would be the background. I tried to find a way to show my aversion to sleep, I tell my wife all the time that if I could survive without sleeping, I would. I do welcome sleep when I am tired but I would go without if possible. The next step would be the baseball player and he represents the love that I have for sports. Not just baseball, though I do enjoy it and played it when I was younger. But I also enjoy watching basketball, football and hockey. The next addition to this photo would be changing the baseball player’s bat into a lightsaber. I enjoy many different science fiction and fantasy stories, but Star Wars is my favorite. Therefore, I used the simple step of adding some layers of lines and giving them blur and outer glow and changing the colors to blue to make it look like it is a lightsaber that he is swinging. The final addition to this image is the Apple Logo that is in the position to make it look like it was hit off the baseball player’s lightsaber bat. I have always been passionate about and good with technology. I have also had the wonderful opportunity of working for Apple for almost 3 years now and so they have been an important part of my life throughout that time and a definite part of my identity. I tried to make this as simple as possible while trying to encompass as many things about myself as I could since I enjoy a minimal aesthetic.

Week 8: Blog & 3D Graphic Design

When looking at this image that I took as I was testing out a cheap smartphone camera lens with my iPhone at my parents’ house it reminds me of a dream sequence from movies. The window borders are perfectly straight, so it is the lens that is making them so wonky. So I typed the word “dream” and used the 3D tools in Photoshop to extrude the text and I tried to place it in a way that made it look like it was outside. The biggest challenge with this ended up making it look like it was outside. The lighting engine in Photoshop made it difficult to match the outside lighting in the actual photo and so the image did not turn out how I had imagined.

Week 7: Blog & Graphic Design

For this assignment, I decided to use my previously used image of my wife enjoying a cup of coffee. I went with the simple magazine title of coffee and added some titles of articles that I think could apply to a coffee centered magazine. I tried to keep the colors consistent between the text and the actual flowers in the image. For the text that actually overlapped with the flowers, I created an almost white box and dropped the opacity down to keep the text legible and easily distinguished from the flowers. I used a clean and bold font for the title of the magazine but went with more trendy fonts for the article titles. This is so that the company could keep consistent with the title of all of their publications for years without it going out of style but using the trendy fonts below help catch the eye.

Week 6: Blog & Artistic Photos

For this assignment, I thought it would be cool to get a photo from within a CABS bus where outside the window is blurred and inside is really clear. This was easier said than done, as with the bus moving, it was also shaking and very difficult to keep my hands still while holding my phone. So I took one of those photos and added a filter from photoshop to make all of the edges a little more jagged. The other two photos worked out a little better. The one of the faucet in my bathroom was pretty boring to me, so I decided to use the oil painting filter within photoshop. The other image is an indoor pool that had a water fountain at an apartment complex my wife and I visited over the weekend and thought about moving to. That one does achieve the cool effect of the water smoothing out that I was looking for.

Week 5: Portraits

For this week I didn’t get the opportunity to take a lot of portraits. The portraits above are of my wife taken at my parent’s house while we were making breakfast and watching over my grandmother. I really like the first image of my wife where the focus is on her but I still got the flowers in the foreground with them being out of focus, I think it is a cool artistic effect. The second image I used the “posterize” ability within photoshop to really mess with the contrast of the image and make it look wonky. My wife is reacting to having some hot bacon grease pop onto her face, luckily it didn’t leave a mark.

Week 4: Blog & Photo Composition

Symmetrical

Thirds

Open

Closed

For this assignment I decided to show some things that are a part of me. Starting with the cube, you can hardly see it in the image but just beyond that cube is my work computer. As I am working, talking to customers on the phone I am constantly playing with the different buttons on this fidget cube. And that’s the point of it. The second image shows two figures of my favorite characters from the Star Wars universe with a TIE Fighter in between them. I love Star Wars so I thought this would be a good way to show part of my identity. The third image was taken in Indepence Lecture Hall for one of my classes, and this shows how I am still a student. The final image is my favorite, it is the Christmas tree my wife and I had up this past year, the image was taken on Christmas Eve. This image is not about the Christmas tree to me, this image is about me and my wife, I just love living life with her and this was a good closed image that reminds me of her.

Week 3 Post

For this assignment, when thinking about a common experience that students would have, Thompson Library came to my mind first. Most, if not all, students at Ohio State have spent time within that library. When going into the library, the atrium provides great lighting, so I went to the top of the atrium and took the picture down.

Another staple of being a student at Ohio State is going to Ohio State football games. With that being said, I ended up taking this picture from the corner of Woodruff and Tuttle Park looking at the sunset. With this, the warm filter works very well.
