Mentor Interview

For this assignment, I interviewed my mentor Evan Purdie and got to know him over a zoom meeting.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The Ohio State University?

A: I chose Ohio State because I was looking for a college that felt like a college on campus, but also wasn’t in the middle of a cornfield. A lot of midwest schools are, so Ohio State was a good balance between the city and the campus. I went to a school in Washington DC, and while I loved the city, it didn’t feel like I was on a college campus. At OSU, you feel like you’re in the city, but you also feel like you are secluded.

Q: What extracurriculars are you involved in?

A: I’m actually doing a lot right now. I was just hired to work at the gym, so I start that soon. I’m also in two fraternities, am a PSL mentor for you guys, and I’m on student government.

Q: How did you get involved with and decide to apply to PSL?

A: Going into OSU, I knew I wanted to be in honors or scholars. I decided to do PSL scholars because I felt like it was a good opportunity to look into the career field of law because that’s what I want to do. I also thought I could be around likeminded individuals and have opportunities to network.

Q: What goals are you pursuing beyond Ohio State and PSL?

A: I’m thinking about either becoming a lawyer or a higher education administrator, which is like a president of a college. I definitely think that after undergrad I won’t be done with school and will have a few more years after that. I’m almost done though – I’m getting tired but I’m almost there.

Q: What resources or organizations have helped you get to where you are now?

A: Honestly, my mom has definitely helped me get where I am now. Ohio State also has math tutoring that I used which was beneficial.

Q: In your opinion, how will your experience with PSL help you in your future?

A: I think it will expose me to opportunities that exist within the politics and law aspects of the world. We’ve met so many cool people, like last year we met one of the justices of the Ohio Supreme Court, we toured the Ohio Supreme Court, we went to the Franklin County Courthouse, and we went to a prison, so I just think it exposes you to so many different things that will provide you with helpful experiences.

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: By the end of my 4 years at OSU, I want to study abroad and further my education in a unique way. Additionally, I would like to experience a different culture first-hand.

Original Inquiry: Depending on whether or not I continue to pursue sociology, I would like to do my own research in a subject that I am genuinely passionate about.

Academic Enrichment: As I will soon start to take classes that are more specific to my major, I would like to schedule a more rigorous course load. By sophomore year, I would like to take at least two 3000 level classes.

Leadership Development: By my sophomore year, I would like to be apart of at least 3 extracurricular activities/clubs and get an idea for what leadership roles I would like to take part in.

Service Engagement: By next semester, I want to find a service organization or cause that I have a passion for and can contribute to from campus.

About Me

My name is Katherine Hayek, and I’m a freshman at Ohio State this year. I’m from Upper Arlington, Ohio, which is only around 15 minutes from campus! I played volleyball in high school and volunteered at the Columbus Humane Society. I’m apart of the Politics, Society, and Law Scholars program and my intended major is sociology, however I also have an interest in business. I’m so excited to experience the rest of my freshman year and more at Ohio State!
