Scholars event

This picture is from when I attended an HSPB Trivia night.  This is where a group of Scholars students made groups with each other, ate, and played trivia.  This was a relaxing, stress-free event which allowed me to meet new scholars and have fun with them.  This was a good experience because I now sign up for trivia night each month to meet new scholars students who I likely would not have met otherwise.

About Me

img_5839Hello everyone! My name is Ameer Hassouna and I am a first year student here at OSU.  I am currently majoring in Human Nutrition in the College of Education and Human Ecology and doing pre-med as well.  Due to my passion for fitness, I plan to go into the field of sports medicine.  A few goals I currently have for myself is to participate in undergraduate research and to volunteer at the medical center.  I would also like to gain experience in multiple areas of medicine whether that be through shadowing, volunteering, or interning.  Although I will be taking high difficulty classes, I always try to set some time aside each week to go to the gym and do what I love.

I am from Dublin, Ohio and have lived in Central Ohio for my entire life. I have been into fitness for about five years now, and this is the main passion that drives me towards sports medicine.  I believe the most important aspect to one’s life is their well-being.  I also try to be as involved as I can in helping my community through volunteering.  I have been involved in multiple volunteer activities in Dublin.  One of these activities includes over 50 hours spent volunteering at the local food pantry.  I plan to keep this habit through my undergraduate years as well as develop new habits to create lasting connections at OSU.

Year in Review

This first semester at Ohio State has taught me a lot about being a college student.  I obtained a lot of useful information (mainly from the scholars program) that will help guide me in my following years.  Before I came to OSU, I had no idea how to get involved in clubs, research, volunteering, or other extracurriculars.  After this first semester, I not only know how to get involved in these things, but I have a plan for getting involved in all of them.  For example, I am going to apply to be a volunteer at the Wexner Medical Center for next semester.  I have also already joined 2 clubs and plan on contacting researchers to get involved in their labs.  I have also learned about time management.  I have found a way to balance my school work with all of my other activities in order to achieve good grades while being able to do the things I enjoy, such as going to the gym.  Overall, this semester was very successful in smoothly transitioning to life in college.

Global Awareness- Being well-informed about current events is extremely important in order to be knowledgeable in any field.  For me, it is important to be aware of current events and issues for medicine.  This is why I joined a club called GlobeMed at OSU.  GlobeMed is a club focused on bringing equality in global healthcare.  Because of this, there is a large focus on medicine related issues in the world.  However, our discussions in GlobeMed are not just limited to the field of medicine.  We talk about other topics such as news and international/political issues.  I plan to stay active in GlobeMed this year and in following years.  Another thing I plan to do in order to increase my global awareness is join a cultural club.  Ohio State has an incredible amount of these clubs, and I plan on finding one that interests me and joining it.

Original Inquiry-  I consider research to be an essential part to receiving an education.  This is because while you learn information inside the classroom, research involves the application and real-world usage of this information.  I plan on starting research at OSU within my next 2 semesters and plan on doing so in an area that interests me.  This will give me experience in my area of interest along with exposure to unique ideas.

Academic Enrichment- The foundation of pursuing a career in any field begins with a strong academic base.  The better one’s academics look, the more options that are open with regards to career opportunities.  This is why I have challenged myself by taking pre-med.  Taking challenging courses are necessary in order to achieve my long term goal, which is sports medicine.  Taking challenging courses alone is not enough.  It is necessary to go above and beyond in order to succeed in these courses to maintain a high GPA.  I plan on following through with my pre-med courses as well as challenging myself with other courses that I take interest in with a priority set on achieving and maintaining a high GPA.

Leadership Development- I am currently on the finance committee for GlobeMed.  This committee is responsible for finding ways to raise money and manage the funds for the club.  We organize fundraisers, let club members know how they can help, and offer methods for efficiently spending funds.  I plan on serving on committees for future clubs that I join and perhaps even supervising a club I am passionate about.  I have also had experience leading groups of volunteers at my local food pantry.  This included showing people how to help clients and efficiently work with other volunteers.

Service Engagement- Up until the start of this semester, I volunteered at my local food pantry at home.  I dedicated about 3 hours each week to doing this and worked with a team of coordinators and volunteers to help people in need get food and other products.  At OSU, I plan on volunteering at the Wexner Medical Center starting next semester and continuing until I graduate.

globemed-icon

This is the logo of a club at Ohio State that I am a part of: GlobeMed.  GlobeMed is an organization that is involved around the world in order to promote global health equity and awareness.  GlobeMed focuses on bringing students together to discuss global issues.  These global issues are not limited to just medicine related issues, but also general issues at the international level.  The mission of GlobeMed is to strive for health to be possible for all people anywhere in the world.  This club not only helps in my pre-med journey, but also aids in my global awareness.  This club is new at Ohio State this year and it is by far the most intriguing club I have joined.  Getting together with students who have similar interests to me in a respectful environment and talking about issues in the world is not only interesting but also fun.  I am currently part of the finance committee in GlobeMed and plan on continuing to participate in this club throughout my time at Ohio State.
