Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

Being a mathematics and economics major, I can apply mathematical concepts to human issues from an economic viewpoint. I would like to work in developing nations, observing the way local economies evolve, and coming up with creative methods to encourage growth. I could observe this while in college by doing study abroad and learning about the development of other major world economies. In my coursework, I plan to take classes regarding the patterns of economic development and I would like to work on modeling mathematically, which my analysis courses and statistics class would help me in.

I would like to do undergraduate work in economics and mathematical research, ideally regarding demographics and growth models, and hopefully theoretical mathematics and geometry if I have the opportunity. While from an economic standpoint I am interested in real world applications, I am more interested in doing theoretical mathematical research first and then searching for applications. This way I could explore concepts that genuinely interest me most.

I chose my majors in mathematics and economics, because they’ve always been the subjects I’m most passionate about. Manipulating numbers just for the fun of it was always what I would do when I finished early in math class, and the fact that I can pursue that as a major in theoretical mathematics is very exciting. So far my enrollment in analysis has continued to fuel my passion for math, and I am interested in continuing.

However, I understand the necessity for practical applications of mathematics, which is why economics interested me. To me, economics was the perfect intersection of real-world problem solving and mathematical concepts. Uses for math in sometimes unexpected ways in economics intrigues me, and I appreciate that higher-level concepts, like calculus, are put to more concrete uses.

Being involved in leadership positions in high school, such as organizing Relay for Life and being on Student Athlete Advisory Board, prepared me well for serving on Bradley-Paterson Hall Council here at OSU, where I am the RHAC representative for my dorm. I enjoy this chance to interact with individuals across all interest groups of OSU, and experience different perspectives. This background of interacting with people different than me can help me in the future with possible economics research, when I would like to work with cultures and values different from my own.

I am currently involved in the OSU PenPals program, where I will be able to write letters back and forth with a child in the Columbus area. This opportunity to get a young person interested in higher education (hopefully mathematics or economics in particular), excites me, as I tutored all through high school and valued the experience. As I move on through the math program, I hope to be able to serve as a mentor/resource to younger students (especially women) in the math department and encourage them to pursue their interest in mathematics.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation includes both a description of the artifact and a reflection on why it is important to you, what you learned, and what it means for your next steps.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. About Me

My name is Lauren Hasselbeck. I’m an honors student at the Ohio State University majoring in math and economics. I went to school in Cincinnati, Ohio at Lakota West High School. My interests are primarily in math and economics, though I also enjoy chemistry and applications of math to engineering.  My hobbies include swimming and reading, and I’m excited for my next four years at Ohio State.
