Community Commitment 2017

Community Commitment is a very exciting event that Ohio State puts on in which student volunteers are placed into various groups that travel to locations around Columbus in order to serve the community. This was the first weekend of school and I was extremely nervous about everything from how to use a swipe in dining halls to which books I actually needed to get for classes, but I knew that serving the Columbus community in which I grew up would continue to be of importance in college. The group that my roommate and I were put into for Community Commitment could not have been better. We were one of the smaller groups, with only around 10 student volunteers and a site leader, but we were mighty. Our location was Como Park in Clintonville, an area of Columbus near my native Worthington. We were able to work in the outdoors by beautifying the park and it was extremely rewarding. As an added bonus, almost all of the resident volunteers with the park organization were Ohio State alum. Not only did I become friends with the people in my group, two of whom happened to live in my residence hall only one floor above me, but I was able to network with alumni in an extremely informal setting. Community Commitment was by far one of the best events of Welcome Week, and it set the tone for my semester in that I was already preparing myself to work hard and to network from the very beginning.
