Year in Review

I have changed so much throughout my two years in the Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars program. I came into college extremely unconfident and unsure of my life decisions of even attending Ohio State. My outlook on life in general was extremely negative and I was constantly questioning every aspect of my life. As sat back and reflected after our second year graduation last weekend, the amount of personal growth, love, and support that I have received from this program is incredible. Coming into this program, I think I was a little immature, but definitely more selfish than I am today. I was super narrow minded and really focused on myself and my successes. From the very beginning of DSWS, we were taught how to work together and be more mindful of orders through different team building activities at Summit Vision and the ARC. Through the leadership class and LC, i was able to learn so much about who I was as a person, along with my leadership style. Freshman year really helped me to reflect on how I wanted to present myself and figure out what I really valued and wanted out of my relationships that I was forming.

My expectations of this program were very small coming into college. I initially expected to slide by simply by doing the bare minimum, figured everyone would be nice, but thought I would make friends elsewhere. Welcome Week alone blew my expectations out the water. The love and support that every single person in this program possesses is unreal. Once I jumped on board and became completely immersed in this program, every aspect of my life was enriched. I am so incredibly grateful for everything this program has given me so far in my college experience and I look forward to continue in my successes, all because of DSWS.

Artifacts

One artifact that I have had with me since coming to Ohio State is an infinity ring that I received as a gift for graduation from my aunt. She always gets all of her nieces and nephews something really nice and special for graduation, but we don’t get to pick it out. At my graduation party this past summer, she pulled me aside and handed me the little blue box with a white bow, smiled, and whispered “Happy Graduation”. She had me open the ring first, but the note inside is what makes this ring my artifact. The note basically explained how proud of me my entire family was and that their love for me was “infinite” and they couldn’t wait to watch me grow into a successful woman. The ring is basically a symbol of my family’s love and support for me, something which is so incredibly special to me. I haven’t taken the ring off since I got it and I absolutely love having it as a reminder of that on days that I feel overwhelmed, discouraged, or homesick. Whenever I get the chance to go home and see my aunt, she always comments on how happy she is that I am wearing the ring and she is always sure to remind me why she chose the infinity ring. I always tell her that I wear it everyday and when people ask about it, I tell them its from the greatest aunt in the world. I am so thankful and blessed to have such a loving, supportive family and there is no way I would be where I am today without them.

About Me

Hi, my name is Meg Hartmann and I am a first year Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholar from Cincinnati, Ohio. I went to Mother of Mercy High School, an all girls school on the westside. Both of my parents attended Ohio State, along with my older sister, Jenna, who is a fifth year nursing student here. I also have a little brother, Joe, who is a junior in high school. Hopefully he will be a Buckeye in the near future!! I grew up playing sports my entire life. In high school, I decided to focus on basketball, but still loved attending all of the different sporting events. After hearing about DSWS, I knew it was the perfect scholars program for me. I have such a love and passion for sports and I knew that even though I would not be continuing my athletic career in college, I still wanted sports to be a huge part of my life. Currently, I am undecided in choosing a major, but I think I want to do something in the health field. Working with kids is my main passion and drive in life, so I know my career path with have something to do with children and being a mentor to them.
