IA Reflection #5

I attended the Climate Change and Environmental Issues with PSL and ENR Scholars Part 2 event. This event took place at 6:30 pm in Hagerty Hall on Wednesday, March 6th. This was an academic event. There were three speakers at this event who all spoke on ways to address climate change, all of which were very different from each other. The first woman to speak focused on the impact cities could have on sustainability efforts around the country. With 70% of carbon emissions coming from cities, this is an import place to look at when considering how the US can decrease its carbon footprint. She explained the Ready for 100 Columbus movement that she is a part of, which supports Columbus reaching the point of 100% renewable energy. The second woman who spoke looked at what OSU is currently doing and will be doing in the future to reduce waste and become more green. OSU has already started to reduce waste by powering campus transportation with alternatives to gasoline and diesel and the university plans to do more to reduce its impact on the environment in the future. The final speaker spoke on how inefficient electric companies are and how this is a large contributor to climate problems. To avoid power outages, electric companies produce much more electricity than necessary which is wasted when it goes unused and this must change if we want to improve our affect on the environment. This event was eye opening to me to see how much the world has already been affected by climate change and how much it will be affected in the future. It is also surprising to see so many places committed to using 100% renewable energy in the future, as I was under the impression that that was impossible. I think this concept of using 100% renewable energy, although it has large upfront costs, could save cities money in the future and I think this idea should be utilized in more than just a handful of large cities in each state. While we cannot change the damage that has already been done to the world, we can stop it from getting worse and I think by having more cities take part in this initiative we can make a big change. I enjoyed this event a lot and I would enjoy learning more about ways to prevent climate change from getting worse and how to get more actively involved in making a change in the community around me. I think this topic is also important globally as climate change affects everyone. While there is some dialogue on the effects of climate change, I don’t think enough is being done for people to see how dire the situation is at the moment. If important political figures looked at climate change more seriously I think a lot could be done to change the state of the world and where it is headed.
