IA Reflection #3

I attended the USG Advisor’s Dinner at the Union from 5:30-8:00 on Thursday, November 29th. This was a non-IA event. With this event, I was able to meet many different people including both students and advisors. The advisors in attendance at my table included Emily Patronik, advising for the school of music, Michelle Coria, advising for the department of Spanish and Portuguese, and Trisha Ritter, advising for the college of Education and Human Ecology. While talking to these women as well as other students, I was able to learn a lot about what went into being an advisor, as well as getting valuable advice for college. Before we started eating, four with different majors spoke on their experiences in college. They told us how they found their majors, who their best mentors were, and ways that they got involved in OSU. Some of them did not know what they wanted to be coming to OSU and others changed what they wanted to do multiple times, but all of them emphasized that exploring all opportunities at Ohio State and being open to new things will make finding the right major possible. Their mentors throughout their time at OSU were either advisors or teachers; anyone who was active in their lives and went above and beyond to help them to succeed. To get involved on campus at OSU, they all looked for groups that they were interested in and often used these extra curricular to explore passions outside of their majors. After the presenters finished, my table and I asked the advisors how they had ended up in their positions. After Emily got her Master’s, she began working at OSU and met the advisor for the College of Music. She knew then that she wanted the job so she applied when the job became available and has been the advisor since then. Michelle, similarly, was working for another school when the job opened and she knew that she wanted to be an advisor so she applied. Trisha, however, was less sure of what she wanted to do. She applied for the job at the suggestion of a friend and got it but she also told us to keep an open mind about our futures. She said that this could be her career, or another stepping stone to where she wants to work for the rest of her life; it’s not set in stone and she doesn’t have to stay her if it’s not a good fit. She told us to keep that in mind as we looked for our jobs, that just like we need to fit the job, the job needs to fit our needs as well. This was a very informative event that allowed me to hear from both adviors and older students. While this is not the only event providing advice on how to succeed in college, I think being able to talk for an extended period of time with advisors was a much needed change compared to other events like this. This was a great way to meet other students and advisors and I hope another dinner will be planned for next year.
