Why were they sacrificed?

The Llullaillaco mountain in Argentina. This is home of the highest archaeological site in the world.

From the writings of Spanish priests who kept record of the events in the region, it was believed that the children were part of the capacocha , or the Inca sacrificial practices. The sacrifices were usually done before, during, or after an important event in the region, such as the death of the Supa Inca, a royal birth, or during times of drought or famine. So far there have only been bodies of children found.

It would seem that the end result of mummies was not the intention of the Inca people; instead it was believed that the spirits of the sacrificed children would act as guides to the mountain and the otherworld, and would watch over the village from their posts. Although many Inca children were found to have been sacrificed for the ‘good’ of their people, their numbers are absolutely nowhere near as many children were sacrificed in Meso- and Central America. From this it could be assumed that the Inca valued the well-being of their children, and held them at high regards as the purest form of being.

Machu Pichu. No connection to the Inca sacrifices, but a cool place none-the-less.
