Columbus Day of Service (Volunteering)

I volunteered at a Goodwill store as part of the Columbus Day of Service for 5 hours. The Columbus Day of Service is an annual event that sends groups of volunteers out to various locations to serve the community.

At Goodwill, my group was tasked with removing older products from the floor of the store so new products could be put out to sell. This allows for fresh merchandise to be put on display as well as the old to be sold to another place to be sold in bulk. From this experience I learned that there are some things you have to let other people do because your expertise in that area is not as strong as theirs. This has to do with the tasks of the other group who had to determine which donated clothes were suitable to be able to sell in the store. This volunteering experience also allowed me to learn things about leadership by the way the employees of Goodwill interacted with their costumers in such a friendly manner as well as how they worked in a team together.

Because of this service-learning opportunity, I have a better understand of all of the hard work that goes into running a Goodwill retail store and how many people their goods and services affect.

Dunn Dash Indoor Triathlon (Volunteering)

I volunteered at the Dunn Dash Indoor Triathlon at the RPAC for five hours. I learned about this opportunity from our Dunn Scholars weekly meetings, and I thought it would be fun to help with a fundraiser for our program.

During volunteering, I was assigned to the Nike Lounge which is where participants go after the race. There, my group helped participants get food, get a shirt, and get their race results. From this experience, I learned that volunteering can be fun especially when you do it with your friends. It also helped my leadership ability because it allowed me to see that a little bit of effort can go a long way in helping others.

Because of service learning I am more aware of what it takes to make the Dunn Scholars program possible.

DSWS Day of Service (volunteering)

For DSWS day of service, my group spent 5 hrs volunteering at the non-profit Furniture Bank. Furniture Bank provides lower income families with furniture to try and improve their quality of life. A lot of these families are moving into new homes and can’t afford furniture, and that’s where the Furniture Bank comes in. Our group went to the furniture bank warehouse and split up into two teams. My team was in charge of  stacking mattress, moving chairs, and moving pallets. All of these tasks make it easier for the workers to transport goods to families when called upon. I learned there are ways to make service fun, especially when dealing with mattresses. This volunteering opportunity had my leadership qualities come out couple of times. There were instances where I took charge and suggested ideas so that the tasks could be accomplished more quickly. Because of this service learning project I am more aware of what families in poverty have to go through just to get the things that we never think about on a day to day basis.

Buckeye Community Commitment (Volunteering)

I volunteered at Indianola Informal K-8 for 5hrs through Buckeye Community Commitment. Community Commitment is a day of service in August at the start of the school year where students can come together to serve the Columbus area.

Our group was tasked with cleaning up the schools garden. This entailed pulling weeds, harvesting fruits and vegetables, and laying down mulch. This experience allowed me to see how a little bit of my time and effort can go a long way in impacting the lives of others. Even though we didn’t see the kids with the garden, the teachers kept telling us what a help we were in keeping the garden neat so they could teach their students about a healthy lifestyle. This experience also allowed me to become a better leader by allowing me to work with others of different backgrounds. The students in our group had different levels of knowledge of gardening so it was important to use their strengths to be as productive as possible. Because of this service learning I am more aware of the effort and time that good teachers put into their students for better learning.

True Colors Reflection

My true color from the True Colors Indicator was orange. People in the orange category are often spontaneous, adventurous, open-minded, opportunistic, etc. The Dunn Scholars program needs orange people to better the program for a variety of reasons. The open-mindedness in my opinion is the characteristic that will benefit the program the most. Being open-minded to new ideas allows the group as a whole to learn knew things about themselves and their peers. An example of this would be as simple as suggesting an event for the program to attend. Some of the people may be hesitant at first, but they may learn that they actually like the event a lot. This in turn allows them to learn more about themselves and continue to improve their conscience of self. I know orange people can be a lot to handle at times, but using their adeventurous traits, they can bring the group together through new, fun activities.

Leadership

Leadership definition- The ability to help guide a groups actions towards one common goal as well as taking initiative when necessary.

I have seen leadership in the context of sport when my high school basketball coach gave up his free time on a Saturday to allow us to get shots up in the gym. This is leadership because he sacrificed his time to make our team better. He also used his knowledge of basketball and shooting form to make us better. He could have been doing anything else, but he decided to help us for the greater good of the team.

About Me

My name is Tate Harnett, and I am just starting my first year at Ohio State. I am in the Engineering Undeclared pre-major program. Throughout this year, I will study various disciplines of engineering and eventually narrow it down to what suits me best. My interest in engineering has come from my love of math, science, and problem solving. Outside of the classroom, I was involved in many physical activities. I played basketball in high school, and I also loved to play pickup games of any sport with my friends. Due to this interst in sports, I joined the Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars program at Ohio State. The program has surrounded me with like minded people who I have been able to bond with and make my friends. Other things I enjoy doing in my free time are binge watching Netflix, playing Xbox with friends, and working out at the gym. All three of these things serve as an outlet for me and are great ways to de-stress.

I grew up in Dayton, Ohio, bleeding scarlet and grey. Both of my parents are alum of Ohio State, and my sister, Tess, is a current student. I also have two brothers; my older brother, Max, just graduated from Ohio Northern University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and my younger brother, Beck, just started his second year of high school.

I am very excited to see what the future holds for me as I grow and learn at The Ohio State University!
