Mentor Interview

My PSL mentor is Jess Manzon, Jess is a second year, Political Science major, with a minor in international business and Chinese. Jess is from Malboro, New Jersey (fifteen minutes from my town!), and is a part of Spoon University and hopes to go to law school in the future. As a first year, Jess enjoyed being a part of PSL because she got to meet politically minded people, and engage in conversation regarding political topics. Jess loves being at Ohio State University, being at a Big 10 school with a ton of school spirit.

G.O.A.L.S.

G: Next summer I would love to participate in the Canadian Parliament Abroad Program. This specific program will allow me the opportunity to engage and discuss with other students as we navigated the comparisons and differences between the functionality of the Canadian and United States government. Learning and understanding the complexities of other forms of government will help me as I learn more about the United States government.

O: This year, in my psychology class we are required to participate in research experiments. In the future at Ohio State, I hope to purse further research in understanding political beliefs, bias, and ideologies and how those beliefs are created and conformed through different regional locations, lifestyles, and the input of the media.

A: I hope to not only major in Political Science, but hopefully have the opportunity to double major in either Public Affairs or Journalism. By adding an additional major, I will experience new classes and learn and conceptualize the entanglement of politics in other fields of study.

L: There are many forms of leadership, whether that be participation in clubs, jobs, or internships. While I am not sure where I will be a leader in four years, I hope that I can participate in many clubs and help freshman learn more about the clubs at Ohio State in future years. This year, as a freshman, the transition to college was difficult and I would like to be a peer advisor to help students going through similar challenges. Leadership qualities will help to improve my communication skills.

S: Being an out of state student, I would love to engage with Columbus and learn more about the challenges and circumstances of the city. Volunteering in Columbus will help me understand regional differences. Back home, I volunteered at my high school as a tutor, and would look to do the same at local schools here.

About Me

This year, I am a freshman at Ohio State University, studying Political Science on the pre-law track. I hope to double major in either Public Affairs or Journalism. I am interested in studying political science because of a class I took in high school. In my senior year, I participated in the “We the People” National competition, winning the New Jersey states and advancing to nationals. Throughout this class I spent months learning about constitutional law and principles, and found it very interesting. Professionally, I would love to work for a non-profit legal organization, such as the ACLU. While I am still not sure what type of law I would like to study, I would like to continue exploring constitutional law, as well as other fields. I am excited for my years ahead in the Politics, Society, and Law Scholars and getting to discuss and learn more about a variety of political topics.
