SEQ CHAPTER h r 1Statistics Canada data from the 1997 and 2002
Survey of Household Spending were used to identify similarities and differences
in the expenditures of Canadians aged 45 and older. Cohorts were compared over
the five-year span to track changes in expenditure pre and post
retirement. Of particular note were the
expenditures on gifts and contributions and health care by retirees. The results indicate that caution should be
exercised in applying the results of U.S.
expenditure research in Canada.
