Engage the Arts Proposal

For the Engage the Arts project, I was deeply inspired by “The Quantifiable and the Ineffable”, a massive wooden hand sculpture created by Andrew Ramiro Tirado that resides in The Maven, a hotel in lower downtown Denver. I was instantly attracted to this piece due to the sheer size and detail-oriented design of the piece. The rawness of the etching upon the sculpture were stunning, absolutely awe-inspiring.  This piece made me imagine a Greek god sticking his  hands through the clouds, which reminded me that Greek mythology has been used to explain the unexplainable. With that in mind, I wanted to develop a short story influenced partly by Prometheus that will consist of demigod who decides that he wants to become one with the humans on Earth, as he is sick of them being tormented by Zeus. The short story is going to tie directly into my physical art piece (fingers crossed that this actually happens). The piece is going to be a human foot made out of papier-mâché in a plantar flexión position, resembling someone standing on the tips of their toes. I liked this foot position because it shows strength but also tension, which would result if a Greek god decided that he wanted to strip his godly status in order to be a puny human. I might be biting off more than I can chew with this rather ambitious project but I absolutely love this artwork. It caused me to recall the whole reason that I create art, which is to inspire and generate thought-provoking perspective of the purpose of art in this world.

My First Semester at OSU

As I approached my first semester of college, I didn’t really know what to expect. Although I took AP classes in high school, high school teachers always spoke about challenging college courses and the dwindling leniency of higher education professors. That was one of my biggest fears coming in; I have a horrible issue with procrastination and my lack of motivation can easily knock me down a few letter grades. I didn’t know how I was going to combat this problem nor did I know how I would learn how to effectively develop study habits. Unfortunately, that fear still stands.Going into next semester, I’m going to take the time to explore a variety of study techniques in order to ensure better grades. Furthermore, I plan to work on being more time efficient, especially when it comes to projects that aren’t due for a couple of weeks in advance. Another fear I had was adapting to the life away from home and away from my mom. I tend to develop friendships rather quickly, but I was afraid that I wouldn’t “fit in”. I, also, was knowledgeable on how much of anything worked, how to get a good job, nor how to juggle all of my classes. Fortunately, that shift wasn’t nearly as complicated as I thought it would have been. I’ve managed to create a community of close friends with a wide range of acquaintances, as well as, finding a job that worked well with my relatively undemanding classes. Fingers crossed that next semester will bare the same results.

In relation to Arts Scholars, my experience has been fairly positive. It has been superb being surrounded by individuals that share the same admiration for art as I do. Witnessing art in a variety of mediums (i.e. the exploration of the art pieces within the Short North, going to see dance performances) has boosted my motivation to indulge in art in a more immersive way. Moving forward, I would greatly relish in the ability to stay involved in the Arts Scholars community by going to a multitude of events featured on the community calendar, being a participant in the Family Meetings and other social gatherings, and staying physically connected to the creation of art

About Me

Hello, my name is Sierra Hamilton. I’m currently undecided; however, I’m looking at a possible major in design since I have a background in and a love for art. My academic interests revolve around biological sciences-including neurology, psychology, etc.- and the arts. That being said, it makes sense that I’m an arts and science students, as well as an arts scholar. My short-term goals are to graduate with a bachelors degree in a career that I would enjoy, as well as one that will allow me to make a decent living (decent, as in, a large amount of money!). My long-term goals involve being a majorly innovative force in my career field, decorating my dream industrial-style townhouse, as well as being a cat and plant mom. Fun facts about me: I did musical theatre for seven years and ballet, tap, and jazz for a year. I love traveling; I’ve been to states across the country and Central America twice. I’m the oldest of seven; two on my dad’s side and four on my mom’s side. I absolutely love animals, except for insects and horrifying deep sea creatures. Speaking of sea, I despise seafood, sushi, the likes. Raw food is define not my jam. Lastly, I love everything about fall: Halloween, candy, jumping in the leaves, flannels, you name it!
