After years of hard work, we are thrilled to announce that Dr. Ankita Das has successfully defended her PhD thesis. While she will be sorely missed by us in the lab, we are excited for her to start her new position with BioRad in San Diego soon. Congrats Ankita!

Abby Jung Receives Student in Life Sciences Abroad (STILSA) Award

Dr. Hamel and Collaborators Win President’s Research Excellence Catalyst Award

Zoltan Strikes Again, Awarded Funding from OSU Sustainability Institute

When it rains, it pours! Fresh off his URAP victory, Zoltan has been chosen for a $5,000 student grant from OSU’s Sustainability Institute. This funding is to promote his work investigating hydrogen production in microalgae. Join us in congratulating Zoltan for this achievement and his continued success.

 

Former Undergraduate Researcher Wins NSF Graduate Research Fellowship
April, 2023

Our former undergraduate student Mitchell Ticoras was recently selected to win the prestigious NSF GRF award. The Graduate Research Fellowship Program provides five years of support to promising graduate-level researchers from all STEM disciplines in the USA. We are incredibly proud of Mitchell’s achievement and wish him the best for his studies in the Molecular Plant Sciences program at Michigan State University next fall.
Zoltan Hartmus Selected for the Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program
April, 2023

While Zoltan may be relatively new to our group, he is already bringing home the hardware! Zoltan has been selected by the OSU Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry to receive funding to stay in the lab this summer. He will join Patrice and help revitalize our lab’s focus on biohydrogen production in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Way to go!

New Comprehensive Book-Chapter “The Mitochondrion: From Genome to Proteome” Out Now!

We are incredibly proud of the contributions our group (i.e., Nitya Subrahmanian and Patrice Hamel) made to the newest-edition of the Chlamydomonas Sourcebook. This chapter focuses on all things mitochondrial in our favorite algae. Our congratulations and appreciation is also extended to all of our collaborators who assisted with this piece! Hamel Lab says goodbye to Ranveig
June, 2022

After months of work focused on uncovering the function of the CCS5, CCS4, and CCDA enzymes within the chloroplast, Ranveig has successfully presented her work to the OSU Molecular Genetics Department. Ranveig will return to NTNU to complete her master’s degree and will be sorely missed. Best of luck and great job!

 

Dr. Patrice Hamel promoted to Full Professor of Molecular Genetics at tOSU.
May, 2022

The Ohio State University Board of Trustees approved the promotion of Dr. Patrice Hamel to the position of full professor on May, 18th. After joining the OSU’s Molecular Genetics Department in 2006 as an assistant professor, Hamel has worked his way up the ranks by publishing numerous papers in distinguished journals such as Genetics, Plant Cell, and PNAS among many others, mentoring numerous graduate and post-doctoral students, and continuing to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses on plant biology. Dr. Hamel also founded and continues to run the MG department’s only international education program (TRONDBUSS) which exchanges students from OSU and NTNU over the summer so each set of students can learn a new set of technical research skills unavailable at their home institution. Please join us in congratulating Patrice on this amazing accomplishment!

Kate Kravets has a banner week, wins three scholarships!

We are ecstatic to share that 3rd-year undergraduate Kate Kravets has been awarded three scholarships from The Ohio State University (Undergraduate Research Scholarship, Molecular Genetics Departmental Scholarship, and Microbiology Departmental Scholarship). In her applications, Kate wrote about her work constructing algal mutants deficient for chloroplastic energy production. Join us in congratulating Kate on these amazing achievements!

Ticoras, a 4th-year undergraduate student, was one of 60 students to be named a 2021 Astronaut Scholar by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. This ASF award recognizes 3rd and 4th-year undergraduate students from across the country who demonstrate the ability to push the boundaries of their fields as they continue their studies in STEM.
