For my poetry blog post, I decided to do mine on the season of Autumn, by creating it with the digital tool Canva. I was able to choose a template that would go well with my poem. After I chose my background photo and typed my poem, I was able to upload it to ThingLink and create my 5 tags. At first, it was a little difficult to decide how I was going to first write out my poem and I had to think for a moment of what I like about Autumn. For my designs, I decided to write my poem in an orange color to represent Fall. I would say what went well was how I considered the element of pattern because it fit with the background photo I chose for my poem. What I also think went well was, how I found an article that talks about the traditions of Autumn, fun activities that students would enjoy and learning how leaves change color overtime. Another element I considered, was color because I thought having the words of my poem in orange, helped align it with the background photo to represent the season of fall. I think what I would do differently is by including more details in my background photo. For my next composition, I would like to do one where I would have the students engage in reading about the season of fall and do a class activity, where they would get to create a wreath using construction paper and leaves that have fallen to the ground and share what they have learned about the season of fall.

Blog Post #3: Informational Writing: Infographic

For my infographic, I decided to do mine on the topic of  “The first public schools to open in Columbus and Franklinton in 1826.” I felt this topic would be a interesting thing to teach students about what it was like at the start of history when schools were beginning to be built. At the start of this process, I felt it was a little challenging with research since, it directed me to websites about different schools that have been torn down or maps. I overcame that by adding in, when was this school built and put in the year as well and it gave me the information I needed. I think research was the hardest because it only gave me the same info I saw. I had to branch out and do one at a time and then move on to the next one. During that process, I was able to find information about the schools I was researching. It was becoming easier to look at articles that included what I needed and what I could include for my infographic. For my design on the infographic, I looked at some templates for ideas and I eventually found one that I was able to work with. It was a little tricky with moving things around and what stickers I could use based on what I wrote. For the topic title, I tried to find some stickers to represent the schools and I added in some symbols to represent education. For my last slide, I thought it was a good idea to add in symbols of people collaborating to represent teachers gathering for meetings. I wanted to add in symbols and pictures to have them represent what I would be presenting to the students in a classroom. I tailored my infographic to students in a classroom because I feel like this design template would be a fun way for students to learn about how schools were built. I tailored this to students in a classroom because I think it would be an engaging presentation to have the students learn about how the school system was first introduced. I also thought it would be interesting for the students to learn about how the legislatures had Ohio, become the first state of having a school built for students.

Personal Narrative from Mapping a Memory

Personal Narrative: Fireworks with the Family

For the mapping of a memory, I decided to do mine on when my brother, my mom and I like to set off fireworks during the week of the 4th of July and we would always drive to Phantom Fireworks first to buy a whole bunch of fireworks to celebrate with my grandparents. Every year, we would go to my grandparents house the day before the 4th of July to set off fireworks on top of their hill in Lancaster, Oh. In my family, it is a tradition that we go out and buy as many fireworks that were in a bundle along with coupons that allow us to get 2 free ones. We would leave early in the day, letting my grandparents know that we are planning to come down to grill out and set off fireworks. We would drive halfway into Lancaster, my moms hometown, and stop at Phantom Fireworks.

We would let my brother choose the fireworks, since he is an expert of what will be the best to set off and which is better based on how much is in it. My brother usually picks out bundles that have 4 bottle rockets or more. We would see based on the picture of what the firework looks like when it is set off. I like these because they contain more in the bundle and they are louder than others.  Typically in Phantom Fireworks, we would be in there for an hour to look at them and the best thing I got to do was help my brother look for some and ask him if this firework would be good and surely every time, I picked out good ones. My brother and I would carefully put them in the cart, since we are afraid of dropping them. We would spend over $200 dollars but it would actually be less because of coupons and get free fireworks as well. The fireworks that are some of our favorites are the rockets that shoot up into the sky, firecrackers that we set on the ground and it shoots off mini ones with a finale at the end. My personal favorite is roman candles because you can hold it in your hand and it shoots off each rocket in the air each time.

Finally, we would drive to our grandparents to store them until it is dark at night. We would have burgers, hot dogs, papaw’s homemade macaroni salad and drinks and share what we got and how school is going. Cameron and I would go up the hill with the fireworks and he would choose which one to set off first and I would help by setting it down and he would light it. Every time the neighbors and people were driving by, they would stop and park their cars on the grass and sit in their lounge chairs and sit on blankets to watch the show. We would hear cheering and shouting all day.

We would use the big fireworks as what we call the BIG FINALE and we would light the biggest one and see how it lasts longer than the other fireworks. Every year we would do this, it is better each time. Neighbors and people in Lancaster would cheer and tell us to do it again. What’s funny is that my grandfather would come up the hill on his tractor with pitchers of water and pour it on the used fireworks and it is funny for us to see him coming up. I can see why it is so funny since my grandparents live on a huge acre of land and it is my mom’s hometown where she grew up on a farm, where papaw used the tractor often to water flowers.

Reflection:

While writing my personal narrative, I would say that I was able to put in a lot of detail into my narrative by saying what I did in describing what I did with my family and breaking the story into different parts. Based on the feedback I received, it was really good feedback that I used specific details that bring the story to life, mentioning my family, the types of food. My writing conveys the excitement and joy of my family tradition. From hearing from my audience of what they thought was good and it has allowed me to look back to see what I could add into my writing about the things I described about the people in the story. What I might do differently with my composition is by starting out the story by describing what is going on first and add in more detail of what is included, making it come alive for the audience to picture it in their minds. I would like to talk about why this is important in the story. I would like to go back to my writing to see what I could change to make it sound better and continue to work on it to have the audience see it come alive as they read it. What I have learned as a composer is that, adding more detail to who I am describing in the story allows the audience to read about the people in the story. It allows the audience to see what the story is about and what the story conveys.

Narrative Comic Writing

The State Fair

During my process for this comic strip, I used the digital tool Pixton, where it has allowed me to use background of the theme, State Fair, based on the illustrations on my flashcards. My comic strip is called the State Fair, where two girls are going to the state fair in the summer and they have always gone every year before school started in the fall. This digital tool has allowed me to create characters and customize them where I was able to have them pointing to things including, where I would have them pointing at the french fries and hot dogs. Design decisions I made in the process, was what I was going to use for the next page of my story and how I was going to tell it. During the process, it was a little difficult of what I was going to tell in the next scene and I had to think based on the theme of the story. What I would do differently is, have a rough draft of my story with notes of the theme I was going to use, characters, where it was going to take place and what background I was going to use when I made it digital. In my next composition, I plan to add more detail in the story with more colors, more shapes where it includes more details. I used proportion in my composition to show the scene to have the characters I created, along with the objects to show how they are visual to what is happening in the scene of the story. I also used movement in the majority of my comic strip where I am having the characters pointing to the choices of food on the food cart at the state fair and both of the girls cheering with their hands in the air because of the fireworks, that was happening at the state fair.

Introductory Blog Post

Hello my name is Haley LaTorre and I am a Senior at The Ohio State University and as a writer I would describe myself as a creative writer. I would be considered a creative writer because I like to write my stories based on things I enjoy doing such as really fun trips I went with my friends and spending time with my family. In my writing I like to start my writing with the main idea and further add details to my writing later to make the story come alive. I do like to go back to my old writings and see all the stories I have written and look at ones I am currently writing to see what I could do to improve on my writing. I feel motivated to write when I am in a quiet space in my room and it allows my brain to bring out many ideas that I can put on paper. I like to write because it allows me to see all my past work and write new stories to reminisce on.

During my time in school, I have had a really good memories that my teachers have had me share them to the class and talk about what motivated me. My goals as a writer is to continue writing about what I am passionate about and going back to my writing as well to see what I could do to make sound better and what I could change. My hopes for this class is to one day teach students in a classroom about how writing about what they are passionate about and what they like to do can be a fun experience and engaging for them to have the time to write and add more details to it, when they feel like adding to it to make the story come alive.

Research Memo

  1. I have learned from observing my student uses the Zone of Proximal Development of having a teacher modeling a math problem and help his table mates if they didn’t understand it. My student does really well with connecting important things from the book with the class and be able to understand the book that is being read to him. My student that I observed does well with having things modeled for him to understand and learn more with examples in the classroom.
  2.  Does your ME do a brain break in between?, Do the kids do a math lesson in the morning or after recess?
  3. New thoughts that I have now is that my student is able to use critical thinking skills by applying previous knowledge to class work he has done in the classroom and it allows him to understand new information that he is able to build on what he already knows.
  4. A quote that makes a connection to my research question would be how “Rituals support  children in the transition from outdoors and indoors and between learning experiences and times of the day”(Burman, 2023, pg. 36). It connects to my research question how Marshall  and the rest of the class would be introduced to a brain break that would allow to calm themselves and be ready for the next part of the lesson. Another quote that makes a connection to my research question would be how “Educators want to support children’s agency to notice, name ideas and strategies that are helpful to their learning. They intentionally model the practice to see what they notice how the learning process becomes visible to the children” (Burman, 2023, pg. 50). It connects to my research question how Marshall was able to see how the teacher was able to model the math problem and walk through the problem with the students. This would be a good way for Marshall to see how the problem was being solved step by step when he was having a hard time on how to first start the problem. It connects to my research question because it shows how Marshall was able to ask his teacher for help and give him an example of how to do the math problem another way.

Research Plan

1.  The context for my study will be at my field experience school

2. the learners will be 1st graders

3. I hope to learn how I can help students transition to be creative and involved in activities and lessons in the classroom

4. Methods I plan to use will be observations, photos and artifacts

5. How can we “support children into transitioning in different learning experiences” (Burman, 2023, Pg. 36).?

6. I plan to keep track of my documentation and notes in a notebook with information I will collect

7. Is this all going to be typed on a document and can we add any notes or photos that we gather while working with our student in the classroom?

8. Other sources of knowledge I’m going to include are online sources and notes from readings.

Insights into Teaching and Learning Blog Post and Found Poem on Valuing Children

Acceptance

Students, I believe,

explore the class and become more confident as they learn.

form attachments and relationships with their teachers.

Have trust in their teachers and feel secure.

All have an importance in their education

and a belonging of being taught.

(Burman, 2023, pg. 11 explore and learn). (Burman, 2023, pg. 19 attachment, relationship, secure, trust). (Burman, 2023, pg. 41 belonging, importance).

My beliefs around valuing children in my future classroom is making sure they are learning from a teacher that they can look up to as role model to them. I want my students to be able to thrive in a classroom that is set up for them to be creative and fun learning experience. I want to value my students with having one on one conversations of how well they are progressing with their work and getting to know them better, seeing that they can put their trust in me to help them succeed in their learning. Developing a relationship with the students would allow them to ” feel confident to actively participate and initiate learning without fear or harm to them” (Burman, 2023, pg. 19). As a future teacher, I want to be able to teach a lesson that fits to their needs so that they are learning at a good pace and it is easy for them to understand and have a fun learning experience.

I want my students to feel valued that they can be able to “make the choices about their learning and share in the decision-making of the class” (Burman, 2023, pg. 15). I want the students to have the chance to have a say in their education that would make it feel that they are included in the activities. I want to see that my future students are given the space to learn with their peers in a safe and creative environment. I want my students to see that I am taking the time to provide them with the most necessary tools.

Metaphor for teaching: A Teacher is a Tour Guide

A teacher is a tour guide. Teaching in a classroom full of students that are willing to learn and succeed is a job that I want to have. Teachers have the chance to become a role model to students that can trust their educator with their learning and help them succeed. Teaching to students means that they can have the classroom be a room for creativity and safety with their peers. In a classroom, a child has a “sense of belonging, a child builds understandings of what it means to learn in a community, knowing that their ideas are valued and listened to” (Burman, 2023, pg. 15).

Learning Autobiography

A memorable learning experience that occurred from childhood was joining the orchestra in 4th grade and learning how to play hundreds of notes on a violin at a young age with my classmates. The learning that occurred during that time was trying to hold a instrument and a bow, playing the music from the sheet music and trying to use different fingers for each note on the strings. It was at the time, all about memorization and the ability to tell that with this finger on the string, this note goes with it. It all had to do with finger placement and the clear sound it made with the bow and using our finger to pluck the note as well.

What I can reflect on this is, how it takes time and practice to hear the correct sound of the note and being able to correspond with your class, making sure that is the sound it needs to be played. It was a learning experience for me because it eventually took me a while to recognize the sounds and how the tempo goes with the song. I would say my orchestra teachers supported my learning with helping me how to hear the sound of the note being played by having her play the note and having me play it after her. Doing that, helped me to remember the notes by memory and practicing the songs over and over with the class and before a concert. My teachers have supported my learning of how I am able to play the notes correctly of cite reading the song and then play it. It helped me with memorizing the notes and playing them without having to look at my finger placement on the strings.

Connections between my learning experience of learning how to play a musical instrument with the help of my teachers and how the term pedagogy according to Diane Kashin and Cindy Green, that “children are in a better position for learning when they feel a sense of belonging and well-being and will be willing to engage and express themselves” (Kashin and Green, 2018, para 4). This connects with my learning experience because I felt that I belonged playing in the orchestra, playing notes and discovering how it was a learning experience of playing a musical instrument that I was learning at a young age. Playing in the orchestra made me want to continue on playing eventually into high school because I enjoyed learning more notes that were a little challenging and how to play two notes on one string with using memorization and remembering important things. The class turned into something that was fun, engaging and made us feel confident to express of how we feel playing with the class and a whole audience.
