Artifacts

The artifact that I chose to share is my Nalgene. For many years now, I have carried a Nalgene with me practically everywhere I have gone. This is much more than just a bottle to me because over time, it has become worn in. Many small scratches and dents cover the outer surface, and although they else may seem pointless to others, to me they represent a journey: my journey. Since the day I began using my Nalgene I have gone countless places and learned countless lessons. I’ve grown and developed as time has passed, and I even have a few dents and scratches of my own to show for it.

About Me

I am a freshman at The Ohio State University who is studying biology and pre-medicine. My academic interests include biology, chemistry, and any other classes that relate to the medical field. After completing my undergraduate degree, I plan to attend medical school. One thing that makes me unique is that I speak two languages!

Year in Review

In my first semester as a student at Ohio State, I have really come to see who I really am as a student. I have learned many things about not only the topics in the classroom, but also things about myself internally. I have learned the values of time management, self discipline, and perseverance through adversity all as a direct result of participating in the Honors and Scholars program here at OSU.

I chose to be a Biological Sciences Scholar here because I knew I wanted something more than the regular classroom experience. I wanted to be surrounded with like-minded, motivated individuals who are as passionate about their futures as I am. Before I was admitted to the program, I was a high-achieving student among many others with similar academic aspirations, but not necessarily similar academic interests.

To be a successful Scholar, it takes self-discipline and dedication to your work. In order to really get everything out of the program in my first year, I have found that I oftentimes treat my work like I would a full-time job. The ability to tell myself that my work is important and that it must come before leisure was a staple of this self-discipline.

By reflecting on my own personal growth over the course of the year, I have really been able to put into perspective just how helpful the Honors and Scholars program has been in my development as both a student and as a future professional, and I cannot wait to see what the next semester has in store.

G.O.A.L.S.

G: For my global awareness, I am pursuing a Spanish minor, and am visiting London this December through the university.

O: As a first year undergraduate, I have yet to participate in any research, but I plan to apply to do so when I am eligible in the first semester of my second year.

A: For academic enrichment, I have selected courses that follow the “Pre-Medicine” track, as I firmly believe they will aid me in getting into medical school. Outside of the classroom, I am an active member of the Doctors Without Borders student organization. I attend meetings biweekly.

L: For leadership development, I am in first year seminars that focus on professional and academic development, which aid me in becoming more confident in both by self and my ability to lead and work with others. I have also attended first year event seminars on what personal characteristics make you a good leader.

S: For service engagement, I have partaken in volunteering events through the Scholars program, and continue to do so as the year progresses.
