Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: I think it would be an amazing opportunity to be able to study abroad sometime during my undergraduate. It is so important to me to understand the social issues and aspects of other parts of the world. I have found an interest in the culture of other countries by traveling and would love to further that knowledge by applying my knowledge on a global scale.

Original Inquiry: Being involved in research has always been of interest to me. Working in a STEM filed like Biology can give so many opportunities to not only participate in an ongoing research project, but to also create my own study. I think it would be interesting to either do a study focused specifically on either a pressing medical or ecological issue.

Academic Enrichment: I think group collaboration is extremely important when working with subjects like science. I can further my understanding of a topic by working with other students and hearing other perspectives. I also may want to find a subject not related to science to pursue study in, maybe a language like Spanish that I can apply to other aspects on work.

Leadership Development: I have had many opportunities to become a leader in my past jobs and roles while in high school. I would love to further those assertive yet compassionate skills into something like a service organization or internship.

Service Engagement: Service has always been an important aspect of my life. I plan on continuing my involvement with the Columbus and Ohio Special Olympics and am looking forward to joining another service organization that I can find a passion for.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Artifacts

This image is of the Sustainability Rain Garden behind Jennings Hall. I have my lab for biology in this building and every week I am lucky enough to walk past all of the beautiful plants and flowers. I wanted to know the history of the garden and why it was made and found out that it was produced after the botany and zoology buildings were destroyed in the mid 1950s. Now, they are being used as research in how to protect urban city environments from things like storm runoff. Although the plants look much duller as the beginning of winter nears, I was still able to find a place on campus that I now can appreciate. I now want to look into getting involved in replantng the garden in the Spring.

About Me

My name is Carolyn Haeger, born and raised in the great city of Columbus, Ohio. I am a first year student at The Ohio State University majoring in Biology. I am also a member of the Honors Program with a pre-medicine focus. I plan on becoming a dermatologist and have always had a passion for working with people. I think serving others is the most important aspect to any career, which is why I took an interest in dermatology. To me, feeling confident both physically and mentally can equally contribute to a person’s well-being. I would love to join service organizations on campus that provides for a community of understanding and empowerment.
