My First Semester at OSU

Overall, I think my first semester at OSU has gone well. I have adapted to college better than what I thought I would. My classes have been tough at times, but it has been worth it. I have gotten a lot out of them, and I have enjoyed them for the most part.

Like I said, I have adapted to college better than what I though I would. I have done better living on my own than what I would have imagined. I have become more responsible.

Some of my biggest fears coming into college were managing my time and living on my own. I think I would like to improve on my time management still, but I am okay with how this semester has gone. It was my first semester in college, so I needed to figure things out. I have done okay living on my own. I would like to meet some more people and become close with them. This would give me more support. I want to find more clubs/organizations of which to be apart. I have been looking a little bit recently.

I enjoyed my time in the Humanities Scholars up to this point. The activities that I have done are interesting. I think being in the Humanities Scholars helps me become a well-rounded person. I look forward to what is to come the rest of my time in the community. I am not really sure what to expect in my later years as a Humanity Scholar, but I want to remain one.

Humanities This Week

For my business survey class, we each were assigned a resource at Ohio State on which to give a presentation.  My group’s topic was the multicultural center. This relates to the humanities, because it is about diversity and different cultures. One of their goals is to spread awareness on different cultures.

This past week I saw two ladies communicating through sign language. This goes along with the language element of humanities.

A couple of the classes that I am taking this semester have elements of the humanities. I am taking an art history class. We learn about different pieces of art from different places and the history behind them. This goes along with the history and culture elements of humanities. Another class that I am taking is classical literature. This has to due with history, reading, writing, and a little bit of culture.

Ohio State is one of the most diverse universities in the United States, so I see the humanities in action everyday by meeting people of all different backgrounds.

Humans of OSU

The person I chose to feature is Drew Speas. Drew is from Springfield, Ohio and has lived there her whole life. Her dream is to become a music teacher. She has been playing the cello since she was in third grade. She has known since fifth grade that she wanted to have a career in music. She is passionate about education. She has always enjoyed school and a wide range of subjects. Going to college was always her plan. Her hobbies include playing her cello, following sports, and watching Netflix. She enjoys college sports the most, with college football being her favorite. She also loves watching the olympics, especially the winter olympics. Her favorite movie genre is mystery. Her favorite animal is a dog, and she has had seven throughout her life. She is passionate about music, claiming that it brings people together and is everywhere. She could not imagine pursuing anything else.

My First Week at OSU

Coming to Ohio State was a major change for me. I was not really sure what to expect, and I was nervous about arriving on campus. I knew that being in college would mean that I would have more responsibility, but also more freedom. Despite my anxiousness and the significant change in my life, I enjoyed my first week on campus.

I arrived at Ohio State early on the Tuesday before move-in day. I was apart of the Fisher F.I.R.S.T Program and the Fisher Early Arrival Program. I enjoyed those events; I think they helped me prepare for college. It was nice to get here early to have the opportunity to meet some people.

Some of the things I am most excited about are the amount of activities and organizations at Ohio State. With the size of the school, there will never be a “dull” moment. I am excited to learn about all of the different organizations and get involved with some. I am also really excited for the football games and other sporting events.

Some of the things I am most scared about are living on my own and time-management. It is a huge change to no longer have my parents and family around for support. This brings a lot more responsibility. During college, time-management is essential with the amount of things that are going on. I will need to learn to manage my time well by balancing and prioritizing.

I have been finding my way around campus well. I have a good variety of classes from many different subject areas. I like my professors. I think I am going to enjoy my time in the Humanities Scholars. I have had fun at the events we have had so far. It is a really good group of people. I am excited to be apart of it and learn more about humanities. There are several opportunities that I think it opens up for me. Some of them are meeting new people and getting involved.

Overall, my first week has gone better than what I could have expected. It is not as stressful as what I would have thought. I have met a lot of great people, and I am excited to start growing as a person. I am excited to be apart of the Ohio State community.

Year in Review

My first year at Ohio State went better than what I would have thought. I adjusted much better to college than I thought I would. I am a very introverted person, so change can be hard for me at times. I also was worried about being on my own without my family, so I was even worried about doing simple things such as laundry. However, I was able to adapt well. One thing that helped me adapt well was being open-minded and saying “yes” to things. This greatly helped me as it allowed me to become involved and meet many people. As for academics, I also was able to adjust well. The coursework could be challenging at times, but I think for the most part I was prepared for it, and I was able to be successful.

One of my main goals when coming to Ohio State was to be open-minded and say “yes” to things. This has helped me when setting goals for each of the categories.

Global Awareness: One of my goals is to study abroad while in college. I think this would greatly help me become more diverse and learn about new cultures. I have never been out of the country, so I may be leaving my comfort zone, but I think it would be very beneficial for me.

Original Inquiry: One thing I would be interested in doing is research. I enjoy learning and improving myself, and I think this would be a great way to do it. It would allow me to learn more about a topic of interest, and it would be a great experience for me to have and help me in the future.

Academic Enrichment: For the Humanities Scholars, I went on a trip to Chicago. This trip gave me several opportunities to learn and grow outside of the classroom. Some of the highlights include the Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum, and Hamilton the musical.

Leadership Development: The clubs/organizations that I am part of have been great ways for me to develop my leadership skills. I have learned useful skills from some of the clubs, such as communication and teamwork. I have also taken on some leadership roles.

Service Engagement: One of the student organizations I am part of, FisherCares, has been a great opportunity for me to give back to the community. I learn about several different community service/volunteer organizations and I also have the opportunity to volunteer myself with events such as making cards for children in the hospital.

Artifacts

One item that is important to me is my Honors and Scholars bracelet that we received at the beginning of our first year. This is important because it represents the beginning of my time at Ohio State and the beginning of a big chapter of my life. It also represents the start of my time in the Humanities Scholars. It represents the personal growth that I will experience while in college. It is also a personalized bracelet, because I got to choose a word that is important to me to put on it. The word I chose is “content”. The reason I chose this is even though we should embrace change and always be improving, I think it is also important to be happy with who we are, what we have done, and what we have accomplished. It is important to reflect on these things and realize that you are a special person.

About Me

My name is Brant. I hope to use this portfolio to document my experiences to share with others and for myself to use as a reference in the future. I was born and raised in Springfield, Ohio. I am an accounting major here at Ohio State in the Fisher College of Business. I see myself as a detail-oriented and organized person, so that is why I am interested in accounting. One of my future goals is to find a fulfilling career in the world of business.

One of my main goals when I came to college was to be more involved. In high school I was not as involved as I would have liked to have been. That is the reason I wanted to be more involved when I came here. I no longer wanted to shy away from opportunities, and I wanted to leave my comfortable zone. Some of the things I am involved with here at Ohio State are the Accounting Association, FisherCares, Peres REACHing Out, and the Humanities Scholars. The Accounting Association is a great way for me to network with companies and other accounting students. FisherCares allows me to give back to the community and volunteer. Peers REACHing Out is a suicide prevention program. Suicide prevention and mental health awareness are two things I am passionate about. Even though I am not a humanities major, I have greatly enjoyed my time in the Humanities Scholars, and I believe it helps me become more well-rounded. I greatly enjoy my involvements, as they help me meet new people and become a better, more well-rounded person.
