About Me

Hello my name is Emma Gutarts and I am a first year student at The Ohio State University. I grew up in Solon, Ohio, but was born in Columbus. I’ve had a very strong passion for math and science every since I was in elementary school. My major is nutritional sciences with a pre-dental curriculum. My short-term goal is to be a successful student and later be admitted into dental school. In addition, my long term goal is to gain a position in the detail field, although I’m not sure if I’d like to specialize yet. Some of my interests are running, cheer leading, spending time with my friends and family, and traveling to exotic destinations around the world. I’m so excited to be apart of the Health Scholars program and make a difference in the community!

At the begging of this year I remember being so stressed out the first week of classes and having no idea of how to use Carmen. Looking back at it now, I realize how far I’ve come as a person and a student. As a person, I am going out of my comfort zone and having new experiences and meeting so many amazing people. For example, I’ve met some of my best friends that only lived just across the hall from me and I’ve joined a sorority that has lead me to some of the most inspiring and hilarious people ever. As a student, I’ve balanced more classes, clubs, and volunteering hours than I though was even possible. I learned that instead of staying in bed when I have free time, I should really be at office hours getting help. Also, volunteering at a lab, although I’m there 9 hours a week, is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. The secret that has really helped me to accomplish all these amazing things as a first year is to always keep an open mind and always stay organized. Keeping a schedule full of all my club events, office hours, and due dates has helped shaped me to be the student I am today. Overall, I had an amazing first year and can’t wait for the future!

An artifact that I consider to be representative of my academic interests and achievements would have to be a flask or any other lab equipment. The reason I chose lab equipment isn’t just cause of chemistry and biology lab, but because this semester I started to volunteer at a lab in the dental building. This experience has been so rewarding because I get to do something I’m very passionate about 9 hours a week. From making chemical solutions, to working with the animals, and even slicing brains! This whole experience has really shaped me by proving me with skills that I use in both chemistry and biology labs now, and will hopefully use in the future too. Volunteering in the lab is something I’m so grateful for because it provided me with an amazing opportunity that I hope to continue with for the next two years. With this experience, I learned that I truly am capable of handling so much more than I expected. If you get an opportunity to work at a lab, take it and make the most of it!
