End of Year Review

Looking back at this past school year, I have learned a lot about myself.  So far college has been fun but hard.  I come from the country so I moving in to the city was new for me, I wasn’t able to look out the window and see fields and I wasn’t able to go out and drive a tractor or see my cows.  I found out that college was hard and studying is a necessity.  I never really studied in high school so this was something I had to learn how to do and get used to, I still think I have a lot of work to do on my studying skills.  Something that I learned in a class that really impacted me was just the small taste of learning about animals in school.  I have gone to school my whole life and now in the few major classes that I have taken so far, I have gotten to learn about an actual interest of mine.  Learning about something that I am interested in makes education a lot more enjoyable and fun.  Something that I learned outside of the classroom was how important it is to talk to kids and make friends within the class, someone to do homework or study with also makes learning more enjoyable.  Studying alone is neither fun or effective for me.  When I can study with someone else I benefit because I can stay focused longer and i have someone to bounce ideas off of and learn from when I do not understand a concept.  Something that I have learned about myself is when I need to I can buckle down and get a lot of work done but  I also learned that I can slack off a little bit when there is nobody there to force me to do my work.  I imagine this is a common freshman issue.  I am able to stay focused longer than I was at the beginning of the school year.   I have changed some things about myself throughout this school year, my studying skills have improved, I have became more independent as well.  Everything from doing my laundry to doing my homework, I have became more independent.  One of my favorite memories from this past year was probably going to the fraternity that I joined, Alpha Gamma Rho, and just meeting and talking to all the guys.  As I said before I am from the country so living in Morrill tower I never really found anyone who I could connect with through agriculture or my major.  When i went to the fraternity it was like home, everyone there was cool and easy to talk to.  They all come from agriculture backgrounds so I could talk to them for hours.  I am really looking forward to living in the fraternity next year and getting closer with all of the guys.  I want to make memories that I will never forget.  I am very excited to see how my education progresses throughout my years at Ohio State.

My Personal Leadership Style

I took the test and my answer was the achiever. I believe it is accurate, I am driven by success and wanting to be the best at what I do. I work hard in school to get good grades to achieve my goals of becoming a veterinarian so I can do what I have always dreamed of doing. I want to be the best at what I do. To me being successful is having everything you have ever wanted in your life, such as friends and family, your dream job and some of the hobbies that you have always wanted to pursue. Based on the results of the test and the descriptions, in order to improve my level of development I need to work hard and stay motivated towards my goals. As it says in the description I have a fear of being or feeling worthless, I want the career that I end up doing to matter and make a positive impact on the world around me. I want to be known as successful and accomplished, I don’t want to go through college and feel like I wasted my time. One day I want to own my own veterinary clinic that is very well known to be a successful clinic for companion as well as large farm animals. I can apply this knowledge to my time at Ohio State in order to maximize my growth by applying myself to my academics and schedule classes that will challenge me and build up my strong foundation for my studies in vet school.

About me

My name is Caden Gurney, I am a freshman at the Ohio State University.  I have lived on a farm for my entire life. I raise and show beef cattle at the local county fair as well as at the state fair.  My family also owns and maintains four hundred acres of crop land consisting of corn, beans and wheat.  I am very interested in animals and put lots of hard work and dedication into my animals.  I plan on getting a bachelors degree in Animal Sciences and eventually a doctorate degree to become a veterinarian.   I am very interested in a career dealing with animals.  That is why I am majoring in Animal Sciences and pursuing a career as a veterinarian.  If becoming a veterinarian does not work out my back up plan is becoming either a animal nutritionist or a career dealing with genetics.  A nutritionist helps decide what to feed animals and at what stages of their lives to grow most efficiently.   Dealing with genetics would be very interesting because you get to decide what animals can breed to produce offspring that are the most practical for their purpose.  I have always been interested in and fascinated with nature, coming from a farm, I have always been outside exploring and dealing with nature.  It is very important to keep nature clean and healthy so that wildlife as well as humans can continue to thrive.  Nature is beautiful and without people coming together to help stop its gradual destruction it will be ruined.  The simplest things can make a difference, because if everyone completes a small task then as a whole we can make a big movement.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

For this semester I have chosen to do the Nature and Recreation list.  I hope to be able to see the beautiful outdoors as well as wildlife in and around Columbus.  One experience that I have had so far is walking on the Olentangy trail.  The day that I walked on the trail was a cool day in the fall.  I saw squirrels outside running from tree to tree.  I saw geese out on the river.  There are lots of people on bicycles and lots of people walking or jogging on the trail.  The trail goes all the way to downtown Columbus but I did not take it that far.  I walked off of the trail to a pavilion kind of thing and under it was a big concrete ball on water that I could spin and change the direction that it turned.  The trees looked beautiful along the river with the leaves turning and starting to fall.  It was over all a great experience that kind of made me forget that I was in the big city and reminded me of home a little bit.  Back home I live in the country so I am used to walking by the creek and looking at the trees and wildlife.  If someone is looking to get their mind off of something or just get out into nature I would definitely recommend walking, jogging or biking down the Olentangy trail with others or even by yourself.  It is a great place to relax and appreciate nature.

For the second Columbus to-do-list activity I chose to go to Buckeye Donuts.  There is only one Buckeye Donuts so I thought that it would be a great new experience.  I feel like it is a place that can defiantly only be found in Columbus, Ohio.  There is no other city that can do the same.  It is a place special to Ohio State University.  It was everything that I expected, Donuts everywhere.  There was real donuts, pictures of donuts and plastic statues of donuts.  There was a huge selection of donuts.   They had other types of foods as well, such as gyros.  It is a small shop, but seems well run. There were lots of workers that seemed content with their jobs.  I ordered 2 donuts and a drink.  I really wanted a Creme Stick or a Long John so I got one of those.  I also figured since I was at Buckeye Donuts I might as well get the donut called “The Buckeye”.  The creme stick was very good, not as much creme as I was hoping but the chocolate frosting on top was very good and the donut was very soft.  I would definitely purchase the creme stick again.  The buckeye was also good.  I am not a huge peanut butter guy but I thought it was very good.  Once again the chocolate frosting was very good and the donut was very soft.  The idea of the buckeye donut was very good though.  I would purchase this donut again as well.  I ordered and payed for a small drink and they gave me a medium which I thought was very nice of them, so that was a bonus. Overall I had a great experience at Buckeye Donuts and I would definitely go back and recommend it for others to go to.  I don’t know if I could say it was the best donut I have ever had but, it was definitely towards the top of the list.  I learned the value of one of a kind and local shops.

Career

For my ENR Scholars Alumni Interview I communicated with Alyssa Witeof. She was an Animal Science Major so I thought it would be a good idea to contact her. She said she had a great time in the program and you got as much out of it as you put in it.  She currently lives in Colorado studying modes of infection of Porcine Circovirus in swine.  I learned to get connected with others, get involved in clubs and do different internships both with in and outside of my major.  Using these tips and suggestions I hope to have a successful career at Ohio State and afterward in my career.
