Manipulation and Communication

Project Description

Within this assignment, I manipulated 2D and 3D forms in order to create letter forms, objects, and images. Since this was very open-ended, I had a hard time choosing which word mash-up route I should go. To have a sense of purpose behind the words, I tried creating words from feelings and emotions versus creating words and then putting a definition to them. In the end, I saw “sweatesque” as my best option because it celebrated the current holiday season and enabled the use of many design elements and principles. However, I struggled in the beginning stages of ideating because isometric letter drawing was completely new to me. I always found my proportions to be off until breaking down the letter into mathematical units. Switching to the digital sphere in Adobe Illustrator allowed me to explore the effects of texts and forms on viewers. Making the poster recognizable was a priority goal I had so I created each of the rows with a variety of textures and shapes. Using snowmen, gold stars, Christmas trees, and snowflakes all added to the idea of an ugly sweater. This ultimately made the comprehension of the word “sweatesque” automatic and resulted in a dynamic design.
